Lady Eagles finish third at Newberry Invitational
Feb. 17, 2009
HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles fired a 336 (+46) in the final round of the Newberry College Invitational held at the Moss Creek Golf Course in Hilton Head, S.C. on Tuesday. C-N edged Wingate University by three strokes to finish in third place.
In the first spring tournament in the program's history, the Lady Eagles finished ahead of six other South Atlantic Conference teams.
"Our goal was to finish in the top three and beat the rest of the SAC teams," Lady Eagle head coach Holly Cantwell said. "We were able to meet those goals, but our scores will have to drop in order to really be in a good position at the end of the season. For our first tournament, in tough conditions, we played well and toughed it out. We hit some crucial shots when it counted."
Junior Sara Jane Sinard (Jefferson City, Tenn.) finished in sole possession of ninth place after carding a 79-81 (+16) in the 36-hole event.
Spring newcomer Jessica Tarbet finished just outside of the top ten, taking 11th with a 163 (+19). The Kennesaw State transfer matched Sinard's day-two 81.
"Jessica (Tarbet) and Sara Jane (Sinard) were pretty impressive this week," Cantwell added. "Having Caitlin back in lineup was big for us too. Our top three really carried us."
Sophomore Caitlin Fortner (Greeneville, Tenn.) closed in a tie for 15th with an 84 on day two, holding her position from the first day.
Freshman Jennifer Oliver (Knoxville, Tenn.) carded a 93-90 for a 183 for the Lady Eagles fourth posted score.
C-N returns to action on March 8-9 at the Dana Rader Intercollegiate at the Ballantyne Resort in Charlotte, N.C.
