ROCK HILL, S.C. – Emerson Ahsmuhs tore through the competition this weekend, notching 89 kills over five games throughout the week. Averaging 4.94 kills per set this week, Ahsmuhs lands 13th nationally in the category.
Her phenomenal week was more than sufficient to be voted SAC Offensive Player of the Week by coaches and SID's around the league.
Opponents had no answer for Ahsmuhs this week. The sophomore outside landed double-digit kills in all five games she played this week and led the Eagles' attack every game. She even landed 22 kills on September 12 against Francis Marion in four sets, which matches a career high. That mark also slots her name in the Carson-Newman record books, placing her 5th all-time for kills in a four-set match.
Her efficiency was also exceptional. Ahsmuhs hit .290 on the week, consistently finding the hardwood. Her crafty shots and high IQ allowed her to pick apart every defense she played against. Plus, she tacked on two aces for C-N at the service line.
She was also a heavy contributor on defense for the Eagles, chipping in 70 digs. Highlighting her defensive performance were two 20+ dig games against Francis Marion and North Greenville. Her efforts on both sides of the ball racked up three double-doubles for the week, and count for her sixth of the season; that leads the Eagles team.
Her 17 blocks also helped the Eagles sweep the Aiken tournament. She notched 20+ points in three of her games and no less that 15 in every game played this week.
Ahsmuhs' contributions have assisted the Eagles in remaining one of 22 teams left in the nation that are undefeated. This is Ahsmuhs' second player of the week nod of her career.
"Emerson has had a great start to the season. Her attacking has been key to our offense and is what most people see, but it's her defense and blocking that makes such a difference in our games. Her performance has been key to our consistency the last few weeks. We are all proud of her and the work she is putting in," said head coach Cat Collins.
Ahsmuhs and the Carson-Newman volleyball team return to the floor Tuesday, September 16 at Lee for their final non-conference game of the year and open their home slate on Friday, September 19th against Lenoir-Rhyne.
