No. 47 Carson-Newman Women’s Tennis prepares for a new season to begin in Sumter, S.C.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – No. 47 Carson-Newman Women's Tennis prepares for a new season to begin in Sumter, S.C.
After a stellar regular season that saw Carson-Newman finish 13-5 with a 9-3 record in the South Atlantic Conference and ranked No. 47 nationally by the International Tennis Association (ITA), the Lady Eagles find themselves as the fourth seed at the SAC Women's Tennis Tournament.
Ending the season in a three-way tie with Newberry and Coker, Carson-Newman found itself ranked fourth after tiebreakers meeting up with Coker (13-6, 9-3 SAC) in the first round, and quarterfinals of the SAC Women's Tennis Tournament.
The Lady Eagles have history against Coker this season, facing a ranked Cobras team in Jefferson City in late March, at the time it was an upset win for C-N in a 4-2 decision over Coker.
In the final six matches of the regular season, the Cobras went 3-3 after facing Carson-Newman and falling 4-2 as a ranked team in late March. After facing the Lady Eagles, the Cobras only fell to still-undefeated Catawba and Division I College of Charleston in a final tuneup before the SAC Tournament.
Coker took two team points from Catawba and took a 4-3 win over Newberry, a team that swept Carson-Newman in the regular season finale. The Cobras are led by First Team All-SAC selection Jade Bellegy and her doubles pairing with teammate Emerson Banning.
In the match against the Eagles, Coker took the doubles point but dropped singles matches to Emma Sanchez Jimenez on Court No. 2, Hala Awad on Court No. 3, Leah McBride on Court No. 5, and Maria del Mar Sarda Marti on Court No. 6.
The winner of the contest between the Eagles and Cobras will advance to the SAC Semifinals where it will face the winner of the one/eight match of Catawba and Lincoln Memorial. The Lady Eagles fell earlier this month to Catawba but took down LMU in a road contest at the beginning of April.
On the other side of the bracket, Newberry faces Lenoir-Rhyne in the three/six matchup and Wingate faces Anderson in the two/seven.
Action begins on Wednesday, April 16 at 9 a.m. from the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C. There will be an audio stream courtesy of the South Atlantic Conference available at RadioTennis.com.
