JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (21-11, 5-3 South Atlantic Conference) will try to build on momentum from a come-from-behind win against league-leading Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday with another crucial SAC showdown with another league leader in Tusculum (19-12, 7-1 SAC) Tuesday afternoon at the Lady Eagle Softball Complex.
Tusculum has won five straight games, including 13 of its last 14.
The Pioneers have solid pitching at the top in Kelly King. King has fired five shutouts and has a league best 1.17 ERA in conference play. She has allowed just four extra base hits in conference play. The junior has surrendered five earned runs through conference play this season.
Carson-Newman has a league best 138 extra base hits, including 24 in SAC play.
The Eagles bats have been potent all year long. Carson-Newman has 10 regulars that bat .300 or better, including Brittany Hefner (Talbot, Tenn.) and her conference best .473 average and 15 home runs.
Hefner is seven RBI away from matching the Carson-Newman and South Atlantic Conference record for a single season with 72. Staci Fish set the mark in 2001.
Carson-Newman took three of four games with the Pioneers last season. The Eagles pulled off a shutout sweep in the regular season before splitting a pair of games in the SAC tournament.
First pitch Tuesday is slated for 2 p.m. Coverage is available on the Coca-Cola Eagle Sports Network on cneagles.com.
