JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (22-1, 6-4 South Atlantic Conference) will try to pull off something its done just once this season Friday when Newberry (15-15, 3-7 SAC) rolls into the Lady Eagle Softball Complex.
The Eagles are searching for their second doubleheader sweep of a SAC opponent. C-N swept Wingate nearly three weeks ago, but has split with every other opponent in the league to date. That includes a pair of doubleheader splits with Lenor-Rhyne and Tusculum, both of whom were either tied for or had the league lead outright when the Eagles played them.
"Hopefully we have some fight in us and start that fight in the first inning," Carson-Newman head coach Vickee Kazee-Hollifield said. "We have got to clean some stuff up defensively. It'll be splitville until we get that stuff corrected defensively."
The Eagles and Wolves split last season in a pair of pitchers' duels.
Carson-Newman has had the bats working of late, but not in crucial moments. The Eagles are batting .335 over the last five games, but have left 52 runners stranded over the same stretch of contests.
Brittany Hefner's (Talbot, Tenn.) record book watch is still in effect. The junior slugger is six RBI away from matching the SAC and Carson-Newman season record at 72 for the stat. Staci Fish set the record in 2001.
The Wolves have one of the top pitchers in the league in Kaylyn Camacho. Her 1.64 ERA is tied for second on the league leaderboard.
Newberry is 4-6 over its last 10 games and enters the game off the heels of a sweep at the hands of Brevard.
First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday. Coverage is available on the Coca-Cola Eagle Sports Network on cneagles.com
