Lady Eagles sweep Brevard to close out home slate, 5-2 and 9-0

The Lady Eagles defeated the Tornados, 5-2, in the first game, and junior pitcher Mary Shealy (Clinton, S.C.) fired a one-hitter in game two, as C-N cruised to a 9-0 victory in five innings.
With the sweep, C-N improves to 35-12-1 overall and 13-3 in the conference. Brevard drops to 28-17 on the season and 6-10 in SAC play.
In the first game, a three-run triple by senior Leah Price (Spring City, Tenn.) in the second inning proved the be the game-winning hit, as the Lady Eagles went on to claim a 5-2 victory.
C-N collected seven hits for the game, including a 2-for-4 effort from Price. Junior Kim Whaley (Maryville, Tenn.) went 2-for-3, and freshman Sara Kelley (Birchwood, Tenn.) produced a hit and a RBI.
The Tornados tallied six hits. Kayla Clemens (Sebring, Fla.) went 2-for-2, including a double, to lead the way, while Becca Curlee (Eagle River, Alaska) added a hit and a RBI.
Shealy had a stellar outing in picking up the win as she surrendered two runs and six hits and fanned four batters in seven innings of work.
Brevard starter Martika Elmore (Fayetteville, N.C.) was tagged with the loss. Elmore (16-9) gave up five runs and seven hits in six innings in the circle.
Brevard struck first in the top of the second, as Clemens doubled to center field to lead off the inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Emily Boykin (Chapel Hill, N.C.) to give the Tornados a 1-0 lead.
C-N answered in the home half of the second with a three-run outburst. After the Lady Eagles loaded the bases, Price lined a two-out triple to center field to clear the bases and give C-N a 3-1 advantage.
The Lady Eagles added to their lead in the fourth. Kelley led off the frame with an infield single. Four batters later, Amber Hewitt (Ringgold, Ga.) laid down a sacrifice squeeze bunt to drive in Kelley to give C-N a 4-1 cushion.
A sacrifice fly by Kelley in the fifth drove in Whitney Kee (Knoxville, Tenn.) to give C-N a 5-1 lead.
The Tornados pulled to within 5-2 in the sixth on a RBI single by Curlee, but Shealy retired the side in the seventh to seal the win.
In the second game, Shealy fired a complete-game one-hitter to lead the Lady Eagles to a 9-0 win in five innings. Shealy (32-10) had three strikeouts in five innings of work to pick up the win.
The Lady Eagles pounded out 12 hits in the win, including two apiece from Price, Whaley and Kelley. Shealy had a hit and two RBIs, while Whaley and Kelley also had two RBIs apiece.
Kayla Dorsey (West Palm Beach, Fla.) recorded the lone hit for Brevard.
C-N got on the board in the first inning, as Kee delivered a run-scoring double to give the Lady Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Freshman Caitlyn Lance (East Ridge, Tenn.) produced a RBI single in the third to push C-N's lead to 2-0.
The Lady Eagles then put the game out of reach in the fourth inning as they erupted for seven runs to build a 9-0 lead. Kelley delivered a two-run double in the inning, while Shealy and Whaley each had a two-run single. Junior Amy Lawrence (Knoxville, Tenn.) added a pinch-hit RBI single in the inning.
C-N returns to action on Saturday as it closes out regular season play at Wingate University. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Wingate, N.C.
