Shealy leads Lady Eagles to sweep of King College, 9-0 and 9-1
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — Junior pitcher Mary Shealy (Clinton, S.C.) fired a pair of complete-game gems to lead the Carson-Newman softball team to a sweep of King College on Wednesday afternoon at the Lady Eagle softball complex. The Lady Eagles claimed game one 9-0 in five innings before closing out the day with a 9-1 victory in five innings in game two.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — Junior pitcher Mary Shealy (Clinton, S.C.) fired a pair of complete-game gems to lead the Carson-Newman softball team to a sweep of King College on Wednesday afternoon at the Lady Eagle softball complex. The Lady Eagles claimed game one 9-0 in five innings before closing out the day with a 9-1 victory in five innings in game two.
On the day, Shealy (6-4) allowed just one run and seven hits and had seven strikeouts in 10 innings of work.
With the sweep, C-N improves to 9-6-1 on the season. King College falls to 0-6 overall.
In the first game, the Lady Eagles pounded out 12 hits, and Shealy fired a three-hit shutout to lead C-N to a 9-0 victory.
Shealy worked all five innings with two walks and a strikeout to earn the win.
Amber Hewitt (Ringgold, Ga.) went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead C-N. Sarah Humphries (Fayetteville, Tenn.) added two hits, including a triple, while Whitney Kee (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Bri Shoemake (Ooltewah, Tenn.) also produced two hits apiece. Sara Kelley (Birchwood, Tenn.) contributed a two-run home run in the win.
Christy Kooch, Stephanie Mueller and Fallon Thomas each had a hit for the Lady Tornado.
King College starting hurler Samantha Watts (0-3) was tagged with the loss after surrendering nine runs and 12 hits in 4 1/3 innings in the circle.
The Lady Eagles grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first. After Dariayn Wright (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) led off with single and stole second, Amber Hewitt delivered an infield single to drive in Wright to give C-N the lead.
C-N erupted for five runs on five hits in the second inning to push its lead to 6-0. Sarah Humphries came through with a RBI single, while Hewitt and Kee each produced two-run singles in the inning.
Humphries led off the fourth inning with a triple to right field and later scored on an infield single by Shoemake to give the Lady Eagles a 7-0 cushion.
C-N then put the game away in the fifth, as Ashley Tharp ripped a double to right center to lead things off. Kelley then sent a two-run blast to centerfield for her first career home run to end the game.
In the second contest, Shealy surrendered one run on four hits and fanned six batters to lead C-N to a 9-1 victory.
The Lady Eagles collected 10 hits for the game, including a 3-for-3 effort from Wright. Shoemake contributed a double for C-N.
Mueller finished with a double to lead the Lady Tornado.
King starting pitcher Rachael Wilmoth (0-3) picked up the loss after allowing six earned runs and eight hits in three innings of work.
C-N got off to another strong start in the first inning, as Wright led off with a triple off the right field fence and later scored on an infield single by Hewitt to give the Lady Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Eagles added a pair of runs in the second to push their lead to 3-0. Shealy led off the frame with a single up the middle and later scored on a double by Price. Price then stole third and scored on a throwing error to give C-N a three-run lead.
C-N pushed across five more runs in the third to put the game out of reach. Kelley delivered a RBI single, while Price came through with a two run single and Emma Bishop (Caledonia, Mich.) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
The Lady Tornado scored their lone run in the fifth. After King College loaded the bases, Mueller grounded out, driving in Shauna Haga.
But Wright's RBI single in the ninth brought the game to an end, giving C-N a 9-1 win.
The Lady Eagles return to action on Saturday at home against Lander. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at the Lady Eagle Softball Complex.
