GREENWOOD, SC – Following a much improved second round, the Carson-Newman women's golf team jumped three spots to sit in 9th after the first day of the Lady Bearcat Invitational.
"Today was a very long, windy and cold day," head coach Jessica Shepley said. "I was proud to see everyone fight through the fatigue and come back stronger in round two."
Leading the Eagles after day one is Caroline Nemes at 7-over. Nemes jumped 36 spots between round one and round two. In round one, Nemes started the round strong with two birdies on the first four holes. However, Nemes shot over par on seven holes the rest of the way for an 80 in round one.
In round two, Nemes flipped the script, shooting a 71. Nemes shot six birdies in the second round in addition to seven pars to finish the day strong with an impressive round.
Madison Cline came in tied for 23rd, shooting 9-over on the day. Cline shot two birdies and par on nine holes in the first round, but seven holes over par put her first-round total at a 78. In round two, Cline shot only three holes over par and added two birdies to cut three strokes off her first-round total with a 75.
Ida Petersen also made a significant jump with an improved second round, climbing 21 spots to finish the day tied for 42nd at 13-over. In round one, Petersen shot par on nine holes but shot nine bogeys to finish the round with an 81. In round two, however, Petersen found a groove with four birdies, including one on the final hole of the day, and only five holes over par to shoot a 76.
Macy Bromley shot a pair of 81s to finish the day tied for 68th at 18-over. Despite a birdie on the first hole of the day, Bromley struggled to find a rhythm in the first round but found more consistency on the front nine with six of the first seven holes at par. While the total was the same as in round one, Bromley had positive trends to build on in day two.
Rounding out the Eagles was Hannah Holland, tied for 74th after shooting an 80 and an 83 in the first two rounds of action. While it wasn't the day Holland was looking for on day one, in a tightly contested field, the graduate student has plenty of room to climb on day two.
With a much improved second round, the Eagles will look for more of the same in round three starting tomorrow at 9 AM.
