ST. AUGUSTINE, Fl. – The Carson-Newman women's golf team secured third place at The Spring Kickoff, finishing strong in a competitive field at 57-over as a team.
With only one stroke separating 3rd and 4th place, the Eagles relied on consistency on day two to beat out Lenoir-Rhyne, Eckerd, and Lincoln Memorial, who finished at 58-over.
A big part of C-N's success on the course was its performance on par 5s, specifically four birdies on hole 13, which helped the Eagles hold steady in 3rd place.
"I'm very happy with how we played the par 5s this week," head coach Jessica Shepley said. "We led the field in par 5 scoring, which was a weakness in the fall."
Caroline Nemes led the Eagles, jumping five spots on day two to finish tied for 7th at 9-over at the end of the two-day event. Nemes put together a 75-stroke performance and finished her day on a high note with a birdie on hole 18.
"I'm impressed with Caroline's grit and toughness on the course today," Shepley said. "She fought all day and kept her composure, and the golf gods rewarded her with a nice birdie on 18."
Ida Petersen shortly followed, moving up one spot to finish tied for 11th. In a crowded field, Petersen finished at 10-over, shooting a 76 in the final 18 holes.
Hannah Holland and Madison Cline both came in tied for 31st, as Holland tallied an 81 in the final 18 holes, and Cline shot her second-best round of 79. The two finished the tournament at 21-over.
Rounding out the Eagles is Emery Fisher, taking two strokes off her second-round performance, shooting an 81 to climb seven spots and finish tied for 39th at 29-over.
With a solid and consistent performance to open the spring season, the Eagles will return to Jefferson City with a little under a week to build on their success before heading to The Battle at Hilton Head in Hilton Head, South Carolina, on February 19th and 20th.
