Lady Eagles Victorious over West Alabama, 5-3

JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. - The Lady Eagles defeated the University of West Alabama 5-3, improving to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in South Atlantic Conference play.
The Lady Eagles started strong by winning two of the three doubles matches. In singles, West Alabama proved to be too tough at No. 1 and 2, but the Lady Eagles secured the overall team victory by winning the final flights.
In doubles play, Carson-Newman took the No. 1 match when Amanda Bartlett and Elizabeth Sneed took down West Alabama's Freitas and Jones 8-2. Kylie Elliott (Maryville, Tenn.) and Taryn Cappadona (Kennesaw, Ga.) were defeated by Shanahan and Williams in a decisive 8-0 match. The Lady Eagles grabbed the No. 3 match as seniors Emily Sorah (Bristol, Tenn.) and Cassie Moulton (Maryville, Tenn.) were victorious, 8-4.
The Lady Eagles were defeated in the first two flights of singles play, but pulled out the victory with wins from the final three flights. In the No. 1 match, Shanahan defeated Bartlett 6-4, 6-1. Sneed rallied with the No. 2 Freitas but finished just short with finals scores of 4-6, 6-2, and 11-9.
Picking up the wins for Carson-Newan were the No. 3, 4, and 5 matches. Elliott defeated Jones in three, 2-6, 7-5, 10-7.Cappadona defeated Morgan 6-2, 6-2. Snagging the final win of team play was the No. 5 match as Sorah took over Williams 7-5, 6-2.
The Lady Eagles play again on March 8, 2009 at home against Francis Marion University.
