A hunt for the 11E Rivalry title and an emotional senior day on deck for women’s tennis
Carson-Newman Women’s Tennis will head to Greenville on Thursday to battle Tusculum before returning home on Saturday for their senior day.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman Women's Tennis will head to Greenville on Thursday to battle Tusculum before returning home on Saturday for their senior day.
Carson-Newman Women's Tennis team will be looking to get back to .500 in conference play with a win over the Pioneers in the 11E Rivalry. The Eagles are currently 3-4 in SAC play and 6-9 overall on the season.
The Eagles have lost their last two matches in a row, both to ranked teams. First, they fell to #9 Wingate in a hard fought 4-2 decision before dropping their final contest of a three match homestand to #43 Lee 7-0.
First up, the Eagles will head to Greenville on Thursday. Tusculum is 8-9 this season overall and 1-6 in SAC play. They are coming fresh off their first conference win of the year in a 4-0 sweep of Mars Hill on Wednesday.
Because this match was rescheduled from earlier in the season, C-N will have the advantage of a few days rest, where Tusculum will have to turn around in a day's time.
For the Pioneers, Ylva Frafjord Landa has had a great season at the one spot, going 9-6 in her singles matches. She is supported at the three spot by Ginevra Moreno Villa, who is 9-6 as well. Frafjord Landa and Emma Kotzmannova have a 9-5 record at first doubles together.
Despite the strong play for the Pioneers, C-N has found its groove of late, particularly with senior captain Hala Awad. The Egyptian just moved into the top 50 in the ITA singles rankings after her victory against the #34 player in the nation (who belonged to Wingate). At #49 in Division II, Awad is 8-1 at the first singles line and has won her last five in a row. She has also coupled up with both Abinaya Sweeton and Kerrigan Spiers for a 7-5 doubles record, playing solely at the one spot.
The women are 5-15 against the Pioneers all-time and have won the last two meetings between the teams. The last time C-N lost was in 2024 at a neutral site with a 4-3 decision. Last year, the Eagles took a 4-2 victory in Jefferson City.
As for Pikeville, it will be an emotional Satruday for the tennis programs as they send off Hala Awad, Belen Blasco, and Maria del Mar Sarda Marti. Senior day festivities will take place before first serve, which is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
The Eagles and Bears have never met in the history of their programs, but will do so in a time that sees both programs coming off 7-0 losses. Pikeville just lost their last match to the #7 team in NAIA, Tennessee Wesleyan.
Pikeville lists just five women on its roster under first-year head coach Daniel Christian. The Bears are 0-5 thus far in his inaugural year with the program.
First serve between the Eagles and Pioneers is scheduled for 3:00 PM on Thursday, April 2. For updates, follow @CN_Eagles on X and Instagram, or Carson-Newman Athletics on Facebook. Full coverage is also available at cneagles.com.
