Eagles prepare to celebrate trio of seniors Wednesday
For the third straight match, Carson-Newman (7-5, 3-3 SAC) will take action from the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – For the third straight match, Carson-Newman (7-5, 3-3 SAC) will take action from the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex. After seeing matches versus Lenoir-Rhyne and Newberry this weekend, the Eagles welcome Mars Hill (1-9, 0-8 SAC) to Jefferson City.
Wednesday will be extra special for three Eagles as they are celebrated as part of the annual Senior Day festivities. Seniors Hannah Price (Knoxville, Tenn.), Abby Reis (Des Moines, IA), and Alisa Liashova (Yaroslavl, Russia) will all be honored for their time as an Eagle.
Price is currently sitting at a 33-22 career record in singles action to go along with a 28-24 record in doubles action. Throughout her career, she has seen singles action from number two, three, and four singles at some point. This year, she has been a mainstay at number three singles where she is tied with teammate Ana Carla Resende (Minas Grecias, Brazil) for the team leading 9-3 singles record. In doubles, Price has competed in every position from number one to number three. This year, she and sophomore Natasha Forrest (Jersey, United Kingdom) have been steady as the number two doubles pair for C-N. They have collected the team leading 10-2 record and look to build upon it when action begins Wednesday.
Abby Reis has been a part of the Carson-Newman women's team since her freshman year of 2018. Since then, she holds a career record of 12-25 in singles action while amassing a 27-25 doubles record. While playing singles, the only number Reis has not seen action from is the number four singles. Her most appearances have come from number five singles during the 2019 season where she went 7-10 on the year. In doubles, Reis has gone 18-17 from number one doubles including a 7-5 record so far this season alongside Resende.
The final Eagles senior being recognized will be Liashova. Liashova has gone 30-31 while playing singles as an Eagle while also going 30-31 in all doubles competition. Much like Reis, Liashova has seen matches from every singles position but one. For her, it is the number one position which Resende has been in since Liashova was a sophomore. The Russia native has seen action from every doubles position, with the best record coming during her freshman season of 2017 as she went 17-5.
To recap last weekend, the Eagles were no match for the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears as only Resende and Forrest gained singles victories after the Eagles gave the Bears the doubles point. However, Sunday was the complete opposite as every Eagles match was competitive from start to finish and the Eagles walked away 5-2 team winners. Most notable from Sunday was Hannah Price gaining her ninth singles victory on the season to match Resende for the team lead at 9-3 individually.
"I'm really excited to be apart of this team because we are close and we battle in every match," Price said. "Being able to be here at Carson-Newman for four years has meant a lot and I'm really to be honored on Wednesday."
When action begins on Wednesday, the Eagles will look to make it six straight over the Lions and push their series lead to 7-5. The Eagles last loss to the Lions came at Mars Hill in April of 2014 where Mars Hill was 6-3 winners. When the programs meet in Jefferson City, the Eagles have won three straight to lead the matchup 3-2 when it takes place at the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex.
Mars Hill is 1-9 on the 2021 season so far and will come into Wednesday's matchup after being swept by Limestone 7-0 and then losing to Tusculum by a 5-2 margin. The last win for Mars Hill came on March 14 against Milligan when MHU won 4-3.
Opening serve from Jefferson City is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start time against the Lions. Be sure to keep up with all things Carson-Newman women's tennis at cneagles.com and on social media.
