Eagles wrap up non-conference with matchup against Flames
One more matchup and then it’s conference time for Carson-Newman women’s tennis
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – One more matchup and then it's conference time for Carson-Newman women's tennis. The Eagles (2-1, 0-0 SAC) face the Lee Flames (2-1, 0-1 GSC) in a midweek matchup from Cleveland, Tenn.
"Lee is a good opponent for our teams. They beat Tennessee Wesleyan who beat us earlier this year so they're definitely a quality team," head coach Jim Frederick said. "They're top 20 and will prove where we are heading into a tough weekend slate to start conference."
Wednesday's matchup will be the sixth matchup between the programs, with C-N holding the slight 3-2 series lead. However, Lee is on a current two-match win streak against the Eagles heading into Wednesday. On February 1, 2020, the Flames took a 5-2 victory and add to the present streak.
Last season, the Lady Flames finished 6-5 (1-3 GSC) prior to the season shortage. They won the first two matches of the 2021 season prior to starting conference and falling 6-1 to #3 West Florida.
The Eagles are coming off a 5-2 defeat by Austin Peay on Saturday. They have continued to see all-around success especially from junior Ana Carla Resende (Minas Gerais, Brazil) who continued her winning ways with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory at no. 1 singles. Beyond Resende, freshman Summer Reeves (Maidstone, Kent, England) wrapped up another singles victory (6-4, 6-1) from the no. 4 position. Sadly, senior Hannah Price (Knoxville, Tenn.) improved her scores from the last meeting with Austin Peay but suffered her first two losses on the season but still stands at 6-2 combined.
Opening serve from the Devos Tennis Club in Cleveland, Tenn. is set for Wednesday at 2 p.m.
