JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Looking to end a five-match losing streak to its long-time rival Tusculum, the Carson-Newman women's soccer team (13-2, 8-1 SAC) will make the 50-mile trip to Greeneville, Tenn. to face the Pioneers (9-6-1, 5-3-1 SAC) in a critical South Atlantic Conference on Tuesday night at 5 p.m. on Pioneer Field.
Each team enters the contest having found some of its best form in 2015. Carson-Newman has won six-straight contests and is in control of its destiny in the SAC regular season championship hunt, while the Pioneers are winners of the six of their last eight contests. Tusculum's last conference loss occurred over a month ago in a double-overtime loss to Anderson in Greeneville.
Carson-Newman is second in the SAC going into the contest; a win will give the Eagles the conference lead heading into Saturday, which is the final conference match day of the season. Tusculum has risen to sixth in the league and has already clinched a spot in the SAC Tournament.
Taylor Lewis leads the Pioneers with eight goals and she is tied for the team lead with 19 points accumulated. Lewis scored the game-winner for Tusculum last season against Carson-Newman in the 88th-minute. Carly Mill, Katja Andersson and Carlie Thornber all have at least five goals this season for TC.
In net, Miriah Martin has started every contest in net for Tusculum and the junior has conceded 24 goal and possesses a .745 save percentage. Hannah Graham has appeared twice and has accumulated 60 minutes of action without recording a save.
The last time Carson-Newman has scored against Tusculum was in the 84th-minute in 2012 as Maleya Garrison found the back of the net. Since then, the Pioneers have held the Eagles scoreless for 186-plus minutes. C-N has been shutout in four of the last five meetings between the two teams.
C-N has its own shutout streaking rolling as the Eagles and freshman Jessica Fraiture (Hebron, Ky.) have recorded clean sheets in each of their last three matches. Young Harris was the last time to score on Carson-Newman on Oct. 14th in the 14th-minute. Since then, Fratiure has played 359-plus minutes in frame without allowing a shot to get past her.
Tusculum owns the series record 18-12-2 and has won the past five meetings; Carson-Newman's last win was in the 2010 regular season when the Eagles outlasted the Pioneers in Greeneville, 3-2. On Pioneer Field, though, C-N is 6-4-2 all-time.
Carson-Newman and Tusculum kick off at 5 p.m. on Tuesday evening; the Tusculum media relations will have a live stream of the contest at tusculumpioneers.com.
