JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman women's soccer team (3-1, 1-0 SAC) looks to get to 2-0 in South Atlantic Conference play for the first time since 2009 as they host the Newberry Wolves (0-3-2, 0-1 SAC) to McCown Field for a Saturday afternoon contest at 5 p.m.
The Eagles are coming off a 3-2 double overtime win over Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday night, while the Wolves fell to the Catawba Indians after an 85th-minute goal on Wednesday in SAC openers for all the teams in the league.
"The girls are determined. They are hungry for more. They are passionate. It's an all-around great group of girls from player one to 27. We continue to stress the importance on healthy competition in the group. They push each other every day, working hard for each other every day," coach Richard Moodie said of his squad.
Four games into 2015, Carson-Newman has already tied last season's win total with three and opened league play with a win for the first time since 2011.
Freshman Varin Ness (Sogndal, Norway) has scored in her first two matches in the Orange and Blue with tallies coming against Ohio Dominican and Lenoir-Rhyne. The Norwegian is tied with fellow freshman Holly Talbut-Smith (Crawley, England) for the team lead with two goals each; the duo is tied for ninth in the SAC with their two goals.
"I think we have players that have the ability to put their own stamp on the game. We've got so many kids among our roster that can offer something different to the game. Holly is electric; she is fast. People know that already but they struggle to mark her. Varin, you see the technical ability she has, is fantastic between set pieces and finishing. She is a true number 10. She loves to get on the ball and create opportunities," Moodie said. "All over the field, we have players who can put their own stamp on the game and that is a sign that of a quality team. We are excited of the players we brought in; we are excited about how hard the returners are working. I think healthy competition is great on the squad. The future is bright and we have more girls amongst us that can step up and do the same and score some goals for us this year."
Although the Wolves are winless five games into the season, the schedule for Newberry has been not been an easy road; the program opened the year on the road in Columbus, Ga. with match-ups against the Tampa Spartans and No. 2 Rollins where the Wolves tied with the Spartans 1-1 and dropped a 3-0 decision to the second-ranked Tars. Newberry is coached by reigning SAC Coach of the Year Deedee Sanguinetti who is in her second season at the helm.
Senior forward Michelle Calmeyn is the lone Wolf to score more than one goal as the Illinoi has tallied two goals. Newberry starts Alexis Carrillo in net and the Californian possesses a 1.18 goals against average and owns a save percentage of .800.
"They are a good team, make no mistake. Last year, I thought we were a good team and we won three game. I think that is hard in that predicament to get out of it because you don't feel like anything is going to go your way, so we have that advantage over them," Moodie said. "We worked hard and earned a little bit of luck on Wednesday and managed to get a good result against L-R, but for these guys, they are in a rut and have got to get out of it, so I think it is important we work hard and we frustrate them.
Carson-Newman has owned the series record against Newberry although the Wolves have won the last four contests; the Eagles' last win in the series came at McCown Field in 2010 after picking up a 4-2 result. C-N is 15-6 all-time against Newberry and 9-2 on their home turf.
The match kickoffs at 5 p.m. on the Eagle Sports Network as Matthew Osborne will have the call. A full recap, videos and highlights will be available following the conclusion of the match.
