GREENVILLE, S.C. – Carson-Newman women's golf overcame tough course conditions on Tuesday, finishing the South Atlantic Conference Championships in seventh at 41-over.
"The conditions were really tough," head coach Alyssa Montgomery said. "It made it a little bit tricky for them… I think they played well today. They shot right around the same as the first day, so I was happy to see that. They hung in there and did well."
Sophomore Emery Fisher led C-N with a 16th-place finish, closing the two-round championships at 6-over following a 76-stroke second round.
"I hit the ball pretty well," Fisher said. "I was a little disappointed with how I putted, but overall, I think it went pretty well."
Despite three bogeys on the front nine, Fisher birdied twice and shot the other five holes at par to enter the back nine at 1-over. The sophomore added three strokes on a trio of birdies on the back nine but carded six pars to limit the damage and finish the round at 4-over.
Ida Petersen tied for 21st, matching her first-round total with a 76 in round two to finish the tournament at 8-over. Petersen started the day with a bogey but carded eight straight pars to enter the final stretch at 1-over. Despite four bogeys on the back nine, Petersen strokes four pars and a birdie on hole 18 to end the round at 4-over.
Madison Cline finished 18th, carding a 78 in round two to close the tournament at 9-over. Cline birdied on hole one, and despite two bogeys, she carded the other six holes at par to enter the back nine at 1-over. Cline had four holes over par on the back nine, adding seven strokes to her tally, but she shot par five times to end the round at 8-over.
Sydney Thomas carded an 81-stroke final round to finish the tournament tied for 39th at 18-over. The senior had four holes over par on the front nine, including a double bogey, but stroked five pars, including a stretch of three straight, to enter the back nine at 5-over. Thomas added five strokes on four holes over par on the back nine but carded five pars to end the round at 10-over.
Anaelle Picot rounded out C-N's five, tying for 43rd following an 82-stroke second round. Despite seven holes over par on the front nine, Picot shot par twice to enter the back nine at 8-over. She was stellar on the final stretch, limiting the damage of three bogeys with a birdie and five pars to end the round at 10-over.
No. 3 Wingate took home the South Atlantic Conference crown, finishing at 1-over, three strokes ahead of No. 1 Anderson. The Bulldogs' Amely Bochaton won the individual title, finishing at 7-under after a course record-setting 66-stroke second round.
Following the SAC Championships, C-N will await its postseason fate. In the most recent regional rankings, C-N was ranked No. 17 in the South region. Head coach Alyssa Montgomery believes C-N has done enough to earn its first regional bid in program history.
"We've had a runner-up finish and a couple of other top-3 and top-5 finishes," Montgomery said. "We had second and third-team all-conference selections, so I think we should have really good odds of getting that spot."
C-N will discover its postseason fate when the regional selections are announced on April 28th.
