Eagles hold off Brevard in season opener, 5-4

Brevard, N.C. - The Carson-Newman Eagles held off a furious singles rally to fend off Brevard College in their season opener on Wednesday afternoon at Brevard College, 5-4.
Carson-Newman (1-0, 1-0 SAC) took all three doubles points.
C-N's Giuseppe Schwarz and Rudolfo Schwarz beat Sam Johnston and Nate Lyles, 8-2 in the top flight, while Jack Harvie teamed with Chris Acker to down Konstantin Savelyev and Andrew Thompson, 8-6. The No. 3 match went to Trent Slagle and Adriano Kira, 8-4, over Heikki Riikonen and Cole Altizer.
Down 3-0, Brevard did not fold the tents, taking four points in the singles rounds.
Savelyev fell to Giuseppe Schwarz, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 1 match (which was the clinching point for the Eagles), but Brevard got the second and third flight points as Riikonen beat Harvie, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 and Thompson took down Slagle, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. The No. 4 match belonged to Kira, 6-2, 6-4 over Lyles. Altizer beat Rudolfo Schwarz, 7-5, 6-4 and Shane Apps swept Acker, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 match.
Brevard heads to Hilton Head, S.C. over spring break and plays Wheaton College on March 8, while the Eagles play at North Greenville on Friday.
