Janse lands SAC Player of the Week honors
For the first time since April 2017, Carson-Newman has been awarded a Men’s Tennis Player of the Week honor.
ROCK HILL, S.C. – For the first time since April 2017, Carson-Newman has been awarded a Men's Tennis Player of the Week honor. Sophomore Marc Janse (Zeewolde, Netherlands) was named as this week's recipient, as announced by the South Atlantic Conference Monday morning.
The sophomore has been on a tear to start his second year in Mossy Creek, compiling a perfect 9-0 record in SAC singles action thus far with only three matches left to go.
"I'm not sure if this has ever happened, but if it happens, it does not happen much," head coach Jim Frederick said. "He's got three more matches so we'll see what happens, but he's having an amazing conference year."
Most recently, Janse served as the lone Eagle to gain a point for C-N against the #16 Queens (N.C.) Royals on Saturday. He played in his normal two singles spot and was able to grind out a 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 victory. After Saturday's result, Janse sits at 11-4 overall in singles action, which is second-most in a single season for any Eagle. He currently sits one match away from tying Jonathan Allen's mark of 12-6 in 2013 as Janse will have three more matches to improve his placement. The win also gives Janse a 0.773 winning percentage in singles, which is tied for the lead in C-N history alongside Kevin Mendes in 2017 who ended at 11-4.
This is the first time an Eagle has landed the honor of Men's Tennis Player of the Week since Joao Pedro Oliveira did so back in April 2017 as part of a three-match win streak over Newberry, Lincoln Memorial, and Brevard. This also marks Janse's first honor in his two years as an Eagle.
Last week, the Eagles saw a pair of home matches as Janse and his team faced off with the Mars Hill Lions on Tuesday and then the Royals on Saturday. Tuesday saw Janse dominate his match and walk away the 7-5, 6-0 victor as part of C-N's sweep of Mars Hill by a score of 7-0. As mentioned, Janse was the only Eagle to gain a point on the board for C-N as they fell 6-1 and move to 4-5 in SAC play thus far.
Janse and the Eagles will be back on the home courts of the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex tomorrow against the visiting UVA Wise Highland Cavaliers. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m. between the programs. Be sure to keep up to date on all things Carson-Newman men's tennis at cneagles.com and via all social media accounts.
