Carson-Newman heads to Hartsville to face Coker
After a successful start to SAC play, Carson-Newman men’s tennis (2-3, 1-0 SAC) are on the road again Thursday.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – After a successful start to SAC play, Carson-Newman men's tennis (2-3, 1-0 SAC) are on the road again Thursday. The Eagles make the trip to Hartsville, S.C. and face the Coker Cobras (1-4, 0-1 SAC), who are hungry for their first conference win of 2021.
Last Saturday, men's tennis started out South Atlantic Conference play against the Limestone Saints. The Eagles fell behind two matches to none early, but showed fight and resilience to battle back and win 4-3. Grad students Gabriel Dabdab (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Julian Froehlich (Kobenz, Austria) showed out as true team leaders as both secured singles victories while cheering the team on during every crucial moment.
"The boys came back from two matches to none and having lost the first three," head coach Jim Frederick said. "This year's team faces a lot of challenges from not having our top two players for various reasons, but this team fights for every point and every match, which I"m proud of and happy to see."
Dabdab and sophomore Ids Waterbolk (Bennekom, Netherlands) started the day off with a 7-6 triumph in the no. 1 singles slot. He continued his day with a 6-2, 6-4 clincher in number 4 singles. Meanwhile, Froehlich and junior Rintaro Oka (Narita, Japan) were handed a 6-2 loss in no. 2 doubles, but Froehlich redeemed himself by claiming a 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 three-set victory at no. 5 singles.
Thursday will be the first time Coker and C-N have seen each other in matchplay since March 2019. On that day, Coker defended home court and swept Carson-Newman 7-0. Before the season was cut short, Coker was 6-1 (1-1 SAC) and were primed to make a run at Conference.
The Cobras will see action for the sixth time in 2021, most recently falling 6-1 to #13 Queens (N.C.) last Saturday.
Opening serve from the Coker Tennis Courts is set for 1:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon between the Cobras and Eagles.
