White squeezes Orange 34-7 in C-N Football scrimmage
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Three different running backs for the White team made their way to the end zone in a 34-7 inter-squad scrimmage for Carson-Newman football Wednesday evening at Burke-Tarr Stadium.
Solomon Duanah (Johnson City, Tenn.) scored twice – once on the ground and once through the air, while freshman running back TraShaun Ward (Miami, Fla.) and junior tailback Tyron Douglas (Clover, S.C.) each scored on plunges from inside the 10 yard line.
Ward said it was his teammates that helped get him to pay dirt.
"There was a kick out block by the fullback," Ward said. "I just followed him and got into the end zone."
Senior All-Sac center Kevin Day (Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.) said it is tremendous to have so much depth in the backfield.
"Many of them learned last year from Nate (Inman). Tyron got a lot of good looks last year. Solo got good looks last year and TraShaun's been a nice sparkplug to the offense," Day said. "
Carson-Newman head football coach Ken Sparks praised the Orange team for challenging the first and second teamers on the White team.
"This is the end of camp, classes start tomorrow, the kids have come a long way," Sparks said. "We've still got to do some spit and polish jobs so that this old Chevrolet looks like a Mercedes (by the time game one comes)."
Sparks goes for his 300th career victory August 30 at 7 p.m. against Glenville State. Follow along with the game online at cneagles.com and with the Coca-Cola Eagle Sports Network on Joy 620 (WJRZ-AM, Knoxville) and ESPN Radio The Zone 106.3 (WPFT-FM, Sevierville). The broadcast begins one hour prior to kick off with the Farm Bureau Tailgate Show.
