Lockwood, Dalton Each Homer Twice as Eagles Win at Pfeiffer, 17-7
Misenheimer, N.C. Senior Jeff Lockwood (Knoxville, Tenn.) and junior John Dalton (Rutledge, Tenn.) each hit two home runs and combined for 12 RBIs as the Carson-Newman Eagles beat Pfeiffer University, 17-7, on Wednesday in Misenheimer, N.C.
Misenheimer, N.C. – Senior Jeff Lockwood (Knoxville,
Tenn.) and junior John Dalton (Rutledge, Tenn.) each hit two home
runs and combined for 12 RBIs as the Carson-Newman Eagles beat
Pfeiffer University, 17-7, on Wednesday in Misenheimer, N.C.
The Eagles, playing for the first time since Feb. 7, ripped five
home runs and pounded out 17 hits to improve to 3-2 on the
year.
Dalton jump-started the Eagle offense with an RBI single in the
second, scoring senior Corey Lamson (Gray, Tenn.), who double to
left to lead off the inning. Second baseman Aaron Vargas (Oak
Ridge, Tenn.) added a bunt single to build a 2-0 lead.
Dalton opened the fourth inning with a solo home run to left center
to push the C-N lead to 4-0.
C-N put together a nine-run fifth inning to build their lead to
13-0 and put the game out of reach.
Senior Mills Rogers (Simpsonville, S.C.) led the inning off with a
solo blast to left. Lockwood made it back-to-back home runs for the
Eagles with a shot down the left field line to move the lead out to
6-0.
Dalton would add a three-run shot later in the inning for
C-N’s third home run in the frame. He went 4-for-4 with five
RBIs. He also scored three times.
Lockwood followed with his second blast of the day in the sixth to
left center. He finished the day 4-for-4 with seven RBIs.
Rogers would chip in a 3-for-5 day with four runs scored.
Starter Robby Thigpen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) pitched four effective
innings, striking out three and allowing two earned runs. Reliever
D.J. Ferguson (Jupiter, Fla., WP 1-0) pitched two shutout innings
to pick up the win.
Carson-Newman returns to action on Friday afternoon for their 2010
South Atlantic Conference and home openers. The Eagles host Lincoln
Memorial at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Silver Diamond Baseball
Complex. Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
