JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – With the Eagles' season set to get underway on Friday, we wrap up the 2025 Carson-Newman softball position previews talking about the outfield with the help of SieAnna Cameron.
Before dealing with an injury that kept her out of the entirety of the 2024 season, Cameron was one of the country's top hitters in 2023. The Alcoa native finished the season with a .439 batting average, good for second in the conference. Her mark in the 2023 season also puts her 13th all-time in the Carson-Newman record books for batting average in a single season. On the basepaths, Cameron was a massive threat, stealing 14 bases in 17 tries in her junior campaign.
Cameron also made an impact defensively for C-N, posting a .979 fielding percentage with 90 putouts and four outfield assists.
"Building the strength back in my hip has been big," Cameron said. "Focusing on the little things that might have been missing in 2023 that were affected by my hip, and just really trying to come back and be better than I was."
Joining Cameron in the outfield is Limestone transfer Santana Anderson (Fairmont, N.C.), who provides more pop to an already powerful lineup. Anderson had two productive seasons with Limestone, leading the Saints in batting average (.416), OPS (1.242), runs scored (35), total hits (69), doubles (15), total bases (132), and slugging (.795) in her freshman season.
In 2024, Anderson continued to produce at a high level, starting 40 games and accumulating 47 hits, 11 home runs, and 30 RBIs before taking her talents to Mossy Creek. Defensively, Anderson tallied eight outfield assists, proving to be a weapon both at the plate and with her arm.
"She has a killer arm," Cameron said. "We all talk about it everyday at practice just how strong she is, both hitting and throwing. She has a really good arm."
Another impact player in the outfield is sophomore Trinity Brooks (Jackson, Tenn.), returning to the Eagles' lineup following a stellar freshman season. Brooks started 41 games for the Eagles in 2024, hitting .319 with nine RBIs. The Jackson native had nine multi-hit performances and was often a threat on the basepaths, robbing 12 bases on 15 attempted steals.
Defensively, Brooks recorded a .956 fielding percentage, tallying 64 putouts and one outfield assist.
While she will mostly be filling the second base role for C-N, Abbi Martin (Gadsden, Ala.) could spend some time in the outfield where she spent all of the 2024 season. In 49 starts in centerfield in 2024, Martin hit .303 and an on-base percentage of .401 with two home runs and 24 RBIs. Similar to the other outfielders on C-N's roster, Martin is a base stealing threat, nabbing 17 bases in 18 attempts in 2024.
For the outfield as a whole, Cameron believes that if they can get on base, their speed will prove to be a factor for the power hitters in the lineup.
"The key is just doing our jobs with where we are at in the lineup," Cameron said. "Making sure that we get on so that the big hitters can hit us in. We're all pretty fast, and Santana is both fast and a big hitter… When it comes to me, Abbi, and Trinity, just making sure that we're on and doing the best we can for our team."
A few other Eagles could make an impact in the outfield in 2025, including Mari Robbins (Sweetwater, Tenn.), returning from injury after medically redshirting in 2024. In her sophomore season in 2023, Robbins appeared in 30 games with 17 starts, hitting. 333 with seven RBIs. Robbins also presented a threat on the basepaths, stealing nine bases.
Freshman Addie Saunders (Radford, Va.), who impressed in the fall, could also see time in the C-N outfield.
Providing a group with a lot of speed and experience, the C-N outfield looks to be one of the more productive groups in the SAC in 2025.
The Eagles open their season on Saturday at 1 p.m., squaring off with Concord to kick off the Eagle Invitational. You can listen live at cneagles.com/live.
