JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles beat King College 2-0 in an exhibition match at McCown Field on Saturday.
This was the first exhibition match for the Lady Eagles under head coach and Carson-Newman Director of Soccer Richard Moodie, who was encouraged by what he saw Saturday.
"The girls did well and they handled this well," said Moodie. "Hopefully today is something to build on."
The Lady Eagles took a 1-0 lead near the end of the first half with Mikayla Gregg putting home her first goal in the orange and blue.
Carson-Newman scored its second goal midway through the second half, with Danna Stringle knocking the insurance goal to put the Lady Eagles up 2-0, which would be the final score.
Freshman goalkeeper Kendra Ivans picked up the shutout, working between the posts the entire match.
"We're going to fix some of the problems from today and realize there's room for improvement," Moodie said. "But at the same time this is a good start to the season."
Carson-Newman will open its 2012 season on August 31 with a tournament at Queens College in Charlotte, N.C. The home opener for the Lady Eagles is on September 12 against North Georgia at 6 p.m. at McCown Field.
