JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman women's soccer team has been tabbed for a ninth place finish by the South Atlantic League's coaches in the annual preseason poll.
The Lady Eagles received 20 votes while Wingate was picked to win the conference title, receiving 79 votes and seven votes for first place.
"For us we're just going to use this as a catalyst to go out and prove people wrong," said Carson-Newman head coach Richard Moodie. "Although I haven't have my hand in this year's recruiting class, I believe we have two or three players that will come in and make a difference. It's a close-knit group, hopefully we can stay healthy, and I can almost promise you that we won't end up ninth in the conference."
In addition to being picked ninth in the conference, senior midfielder Brooke Ehman was named to the preseason All-SAC second team.
Ehman, a native of Chelsea, Mich., played and started in all 17 matches in 2011, her first at Carson-Newman. She scored four goals and added two assists for a total of 10 points in her junior campaign after transferring to C-N from Schoolcraft College.
"Brooke is a quality player," Moodie said. "She's a senior, she's taken the team under her wing. She's definitely one of those go-to people on the squad when you're looking for inspiration or motivation."
Carson-Newman will open its 2012 season on August 31 with a tournament at Queens College in Charlotte, N.C. The home opener for the Lady Eagles is on September 12 against North Georgia at 6 p.m. at McCown Field.
