CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In the first of two exhibitions games, the Carson-Newman Lady Eagles fell to No. 13 North Carolina 88-27 at Carmichael Arena Wednesday night.
"I was proud of them in the first half," head coach Mike Mincey said. "Those first few looks that we got were wide open looks, but we couldn't get something to go down. We obviously struggled scoring, but I thought we ran our offense OK. Anytime they pick up the heat, it was a little difficult to run our stuff."
The Tar Heels scored 19 of the first 23 points as Carson-Newman started 2-for-17 from the floor. Carson-Newman score eight of the next 17 points to pull within 16 points at 28-12 before going into the locker room trailing 37-14.
While the scoreboard did not favor the Lady Eagles, Carson-Newman was trailing the bigger North Carolina team 23-17 on the glass with a 7-6 lead in offensive rebounds while forcing nine turnovers on six steals.
"There were a lot of things in the first half that I thought we did well," Mincey said. "Scoring 14 points is not very good. To hold a team to a team like North Carolina that wants to average over 80 points a game to 37, I felt like we did a pretty good job. All 13 of them played. I thought they all brought good intensity."
North Carolina surged out of the break with a 26-7 run in a half that saw the Tar Heels shoot 62 percent from the floor as they outscored the Lady Eagles 51-13 in the second stanza.
Senior forward Jasmine Poole (Harrisburg, Pa.) led the way in her first game at Carson-Newman with eight points and five rebounds.
Junior guard Jai Jai McLaughlin (Knoxville, Tenn.) had three points and team-best seven rebounds.
The Lady Eagles were held to 18 percent shooting from the floor while converting on just one of 20 three point attempts.
Preseason All-ACC selection Allisha Gray poured in 22 points with six rebounds, three assists and three steals to lead the way for the home team as four players scored in double figures for the Tar Heels.
Carson-Newman concludes its exhibition season with a trip to the University of Tennessee Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The game will be available on the Eagle Sports Network with coverage beginning at 1:45 with the "AEC Countdown to Tipoff".
