Eagles Stump No. 44 UVA Wise in Conference Clash
The Eagles’ Men’s Tennis team improved to 2-0 in conference play with a 4-1 win against nationally-ranked UVA Wise.
WISE, Va. – The Eagles' Men's Tennis team improved to 2-0 in conference play with a 4-1 win against nationally-ranked UVA Wise.
Carson-Newman (4-1, 2-0 South Atlantic Conference) found ways to win over No. 44 UVA Wise (8-5, 0-3 SAC) in its first win over a nationally ranked opponent according to the International Tennis Association (ITA) this season.
"We made some strides and improvements in our doubles," Carson-Newman Men's Tennis head coach Nathan Gangelhoff said. "We had great intensity and team energy throughout and that carried us for our singles wins. Really proud of Leo (Baecker) for coming back stronger from his previous match. We keep improving each match and have more room to grow."
Singles play was dominant for C-N as the three matches the Eagles finished and prevailed in, the opponent from Wise was not allowed to win more than two games in a set.

No. 1: Marnix Van Dalen (C-N) def. Dmitrii Semenov (WISE) 6-2, 6-1
No. 2: Miguel De Rueda (WISE) def. Paul Gayk (C-N) 6-3, 6-3
No. 3: Gjorgji Jankulovski (C-N) def. Chathurya Nilaweera (WISE) 6-1, 6-2
No. 4: Daniel Gonzalez Garza (WISE) vs. Louis Keenan (C-N) 2-6, 4-1, unfinished
No. 5: Yi-Hsuan Chen (WISE) vs. Matthew Saunders (C-N) 6-3, 3-4, unfinished
No. 6: Leonard Baecker (C-N) def. Vanja Vojinovic (WISE) 6-2, 6-2
Doubles split the first two matches, with the No. 3 flight coming down to a 12th game after the Eagles had to win by two games with a 6-5 advantage. Eventually, the pairing of Baecker/Saunders pulled away to take the match 7-5, and the doubles point alongside it.

Carson-Newman next hits the court back at home at the Charles A. "Buddy" Catlett Tennis Complex where, as always, admission is free. The Eagles will look to go 3-0 in conference play with a clash against Lenoir-Rhyne on Thursday, March 13 at 2 p.m.
