JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Returning to the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex for a three-game series against Emory & Henry, the Eagles are looking to put two losses in the rearview hosting the Wasps on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at noon with the series concluding on Sunday at 1 p.m.
In a small sample size, the Orange and Blue are averaging nine runs per game at home and hitting .299 in two games compared to posting fewer than four runs per contest and hitting .238 as a team in six road games. Carson-Newman's pitching staff has 16 punch outs in 18 innings at home while it has walked 34 batters in 48 2/3 innings on the road.
Coach Tom Griffin's team had been excellent at getting on base reaching base at a .442 clip as a lead-off batter in the first seven games before going 0-for-9 at Shorter on Tuesday. There have been three games this season where the team has had five or fewer at bats with runners in scoring position.
Turn it over to the pitching staff and foes have reach base in at least half of the innings played in five of the first eight games of the year. The good news is teams are hitting .255 with runners on base this year including a .250 clip during the current three-game losing streak.
This weekend will be the first time that Carson-Newman (2-6) squares off with Emory & Henry (4-4). The Eagles have won five in a row against schools from Virginia since a 10-4 loss to UVA Wise on March 22, 2016. Prior to that the team had not lost to a school from the Old Dominion State since a 4-2 loss to Virginia Intermont on April 30, 1997.
This weekend's series is a non-conference tussle but it is the Wasps first year as members of the South Atlantic Conference projected to finish last in the league getting 14 points. Last year, the unit went 9-28 overall and was 6-17 on the road.
Overall, the program has not posted a winning season in three decades since going 15-13 during the 1993 season. In the last 20 years, the club has been held to single-digit wins 16 times having not crested 10 since going 11-21 in 2018. The last time the team was above .500 in league play came in 2012 going 11-7.
In the school's history, one player has reached the Major Leagues when Monte Weaver spent nine years from 1931-39, the first eight with the Washington Senators and last year with the Boston Red Sox. The southpaw's best year came in 1932, his second year, when he won 20 games and finished 18th in MVP voting with the top two vote getters being Jimmie Foxx and Lou Gehrig as two teammates finished in the top six. Weaver pitched in one postseason game, game four of the 1933 World Series hurling 10 1/3 innings giving up two earned runs in a 2-1 loss.
Coach Trey McCall is in his 19th year at the helm of the program holding the school record for wins with 154. As a player he turned down an opportunity to play at North Carolina after being drafted 16th overall in the 1985 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies in a draft that featured future Hall of Famers Barry Larkin (fourth) and Barry Bonds (sixth). He hit 15 homers in five minor league seasons.
Last weekend the Wasps swept Anderson in a three-game series after battling North Greenville, the defending National Champions, to a 12-7 setback when an eight-run third proved to be the difference. Otherwise the pitching staff allowed four runs in 7 2/3 innings.
At the dish, the group has one homer for the year but is 11-for-13 in stolen base attempts. Eight different players have driven in multiple runs with Wayne Mize leading the way with seven tallying three mutli-hit games. Jared Foley is hitting .351 and has hit safely in each of the last seven games after going 0-for-4 in the season opener.
On the mound, the team has used 17 different flamethrowers with only two throwing at least 10 innings. Andrew Parr is the leader with 12 innings pitched allowing one earned run and seven hits so far. In last Saturday's win over Anderson, he went seven innings giving up on unearned run on two hits.
All three games this weekend will air on FloSports with an subscription required to watch the video while both Tuesday and Wednesday featuring audio-only streams available on cneagles.com/live.
