Mustangs pummel Eagles in first day of Stevenson Invitational
OWINGS MILLS, MD -- Following last weekend’s set of losses, Carson-Newman’s beach volleyball team lost 5-0 to Stevenson in day one of the Stevenson Invitational.
OWINGS MILLS, MD -- Following last weekend's set of losses, Carson-Newman's beach volleyball team opened its final event of the season with a 5-0 loss to Stevenson in day one of the Stevenson Invitational.
The Eagles (0-14) now hold the most consecutive losses in a season in program history, surpassing the feat previously held by the 2015 inaugural squad. This loss also marks the first in the event hosted by Stevenson (15-6) and the first to the Mustangs in four match-ups.
The day started with Catherine Cook (Morristown, Tenn.) and Lexy Headley (Sharps Chapel, Tenn.) at the No. 5 seed. They were defeated by Emily Castro and Lizi Cudal 21- 11 in the first set and once against in a similar scoring second set, 21-10.
At the No. 4 position sat the duo of Morgan Harlan (Ladara Ranch, Calif.) and Grace Seymour (Hudson, Fla.). The two scored the most points on the day of any Carson-Newman duo making the score of the first set 21-17. Harlan and Seymour regressed in the second set, handing over the match to Julie Nightwine and Victoria Prokic 21-13.
At the No. 3 spot, Darian Hileman and Jessi Freeman defeated Abby Struewing (Lebanon, Ohio) and Micah Depetro (Knoxville, Tenn.) in back-to-back sets 21-12, 21-8. The C-N defeat handed Stevenson the win on the day with a 3-0 lead heading into the final flight.
Aryana Fazelnia (Weston, Fla.) and Montgomery Sauter (Columbia, S.C.) were annihilated by Lauren Weaver and Katie Leftridge at the No. 2 seed 21-5 in the first set. The second set brought a similar result with a 21-9 score in favor of the Mustangs pairing.
Finishing the day at No.1 was Kelly Hughes (Woodbridge, Va.) and Summer Coulter (El Paso, Texas). The C-N tandem lost the first set 21-13 after staying engaged for a majority of the match. Annika Schwartz and Trang Christensen carried their momentum into the second set and won the match 21-7.
The Eagles will be back tomorrow against Stevenson again at 10 a.m. at the SU beach volleyball courts.
