JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman has won seven of its last eight games entering a midweek battle with Anderson Wednesday night at 6 p.m. for a top-tier South Atlantic Conference tilt at the Abney Athletic Center.
C-N (15-7, 12-4) and Anderson (15-5, 12-4) enter the game tied for third in the league standings and a win by coach Mike Mincey's group would solidify a position in the top portion of the conference with five games remaining.
"We had a really good practice yesterday," Mincey said. "They brought their energy. They took it upon themselves to have a good practice. The excitement level is really high as to what this team can achieve this particular year. We are healthy. I almost hate to say that. We are playing with all 12 that we started with which has not been the case the past few years. I just think they have a lot of belief in themselves. I think the Catawba win over the weekend let them know that they can go on the road and beat a quality opponent."
The Lady Eagles have won three straight contests against the Trojans in a young series that sees C-N hold a narrow 10-7 edge.
Carson-Newman pulled away late in the first meeting this season to earn an 83-66 victory to hand AU its first road loss of the year in a game where senior Kailyn Brooks reached 1,000 career points to become the 19th Lady Eagle to cross that threshold in a career.
Mika Wester led all players with 25 points, her seventh 20-point night of the year, while filling up the stat sheet with eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals.
Alexy Mollenhauer led AU with 15 points on 5-for-15 shooting and Jasmine Franklin was the only other player to score in double figures finishing with 12 points and six rebounds.
In six seasons since Anderson joined the conference in 2010-11, there has only been a season split between the two sides twice, 2010-11 and 2013-14.
C-N is 7-4 in road games this season and with a win Wednesday night, the Lady Eagles would match the most road wins under coach Mincey matching last year's group and sealing a winning road record for the third time in the last six years.
Anderson enters the affair having won four of its last five following a five-game losing streak with the lone blemish coming on Feb. 1 when Tusculum picked up a 65-51 upset win in Greeneville, Tenn.
The Trojans are the top defensive club in the conference ranking 15th in the nation in field-goal percentage defense yielding 35 percent while registering a 24 percent clip from three-point range, a mark that is fourth in the United States.
Coach Jonathan Barbaree's group is posting 85.7 points per game in 10 home games this season having racked up 80 or more points eight times at the Abney Athletic Center.
The club is ninth in the SAC in turnovers per game at 17.9 per night aided in part by a 31-giveaway effort at Newberry on the last day of January. Exclude that contest and the Trojans have not turned it over more than 17 times in their last 14 games.
There is one player averaging in double figures on the roster, Heather Jankowy, tallying 10.3 points per game, 23rd in the conference. The senior ranks fifth in the league with 41 triples shooting 35 percent.
The game will be broadcast on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station Mountain Country 106.3 WPFT-FM and streaming online at cneagles.com/live with "The Appalachian Electric Cooperative Countdown to Tip-Off" leading into the play-by-play.
