CLEVELAND – The No. 2 Delta State University women's basketball team jumped out to a 9-2 lead on Carson Newman College Friday evening and cruised to a 76-46 victory in game one of the 6th annual Lloyd Clark Classic at Walter Sillers Coliseum. The Lady Statesmen moved to 1-0 on the year, while the Eagles dropped to 1-3.
DSU led by 14 at the half, 42-28, by shooting 57.6 percent (19-of-33) from the field. CNC shot 9-of-22 from the field for 40.9 percent.
The second half saw the Lady Statesmen outscore the Eagles 34-18 en route to the 30-point win. DSU was 14-of-26 (53.8 percent) in the second frame, while holding CNC to 6-of-26 (23.1 percent).
Delta State's Veronica Walker led all scorers with 22 points, while clearing seven rebounds. Sheena Johnson added 14 points and Moe Bell dropped in 10. Sarita "Bug" Cooper dished out a game-high eight assists. True freshman Brooke Rhodes scored seven points and handed out three assists off the bench.
The Lady Statesmen return to action on Saturday, as DSU faces Lincoln Memorial in game three of the 6th annual Lloyd Clark Classic at Sillers Coliseum. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.
