No. 2/2 Eagles wrap up regular season at Tennessee River Rumble

LENOIR CITY, Tenn. - After a week off, the no. 2/2 Carson-Newman men's golf team travels to Lenoir City for the Tennessee River Rumble.
The tournament will consist of two, 18 hole rounds on Monday, Mar. 28 with the final round on Tuesday, Mar. 29. Both days begin at 9:00 AM with a shotgun start.
The field is stacked with high quality Divsion-II competition, including no. 5/5 Lee, no. 2/3 USC-Aiken and no.7/8 North Georgia. A slew of SAC foes will also play at the tournament, with host no. 4/6 Lincoln Memorial having two teams in the field along with no. 23 Queens, Tusculum, Catawba, Lenoir-Rhyne, and Coker making the trip to the Volunteer State.
Carson-Newman is coming off their best performance of the season at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate. The Eagles shot 29-under par for the entire two-round tournament, shooting a 547 and defeating Division-I Oral Roberts by 12 strokes. The second round 272 score is now the lowest team round score in the history of the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate tournament, beating out the previous best score of 274 set by Carson-Newman in the second round of the 2017 event by two strokes. The team's 36-hole score of 547 beats the previous best 36-hole score set by UT Martin in 2013 of 593 by 46 strokes.
The 272 second round score is the third lowest round in SAC history for men's golf.
Elliot MacGregor won his first career tournament individual championship, shooting a five-under 67 and rising three spots throughout the second round. The Shepperton, Middlesex native shot nine-under throughout the week, finishing with a final score of 135. MacGregor had the best score of any competitor on par fours, shooting six-under and an average score of 3.70. His 11 birdies were second-most in the field.
Individually, Jonathan Nielsen sits as the third-best golfer in all of Division-II acoording to Golfstat. In play against the top 50 golfers in all of Division-II this season, just three have finished with a lower score than Nielsen has at events.
Three other Eagles sit inside the top-80 in the Golfstat rankings. Alex Hodge held steady at 64th in this week's rankings. At the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate last week, Hodge finished tied for third after shooting a three-under 69 in the second round. The Knoxville, Tenn. native finished the tournament with an eight-under 136. His five-under and average score of 3.75 on par fours was tied for second-best in the entire field.
Jake Mynatt is up into the top-80 of the national rankings, up five spots to 79th in the nation. Mynatt finished fifth at Bobby Nichols after recording a four-under 68 in the second round. Mynatt ended the week with a seven-under 137. The junior finished tied for the best score on par fives, shooting an average score of 4.13 and seven-under. He also had 11 birdies during the week.
Right behind Mynatt is Jackson Tyler, moving up seven spots in the individual rankings to 80th. Tyler finished tied for 14th overall at Bobby Nichols after improving by one stroke in the second round, shooting a two-under 70. He was one of just 24 players to record an eagle at the Sevier Golf Club River Course.
The 2021 Tennessee River Rumble was a tale of two days for the Eagles. After shooting their worst round of the season on day one,a 281 in the final round gave Carson-Newman the lowest score it has ever posted at the Tennessee River Rumble, jumping up seven spots on the final day for a share of fourth to close out the regular season at the WindRiver Golf Club.
The Eagles were 7-under through the last 18 holes to match their lowest round of the year that they posted in the opening round of the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate. They finished last year's event with an even 864, one-shot shy of the top-three. Their 52 birdies throughout the three rounds were the second-most in the field, 21 of those coming in the final round.
Hodge posted the lowest score of the week for the group in last year's final round with a 5-under 67, his best round in the Orange and Blue, to finish in a tie for 10th with a 4-under 212. He carded seven birdies in the round, doubling his amount from the first two rounds combined.
