KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - For the first time since 2019, the Carson-Newman Men's Golf team is coming home with a win thanks to top-ten finishes from Alex Hodge and Jake Mynatt.
Carson-Newman comes out on top of a impressive field full of South Atlantic Conference foes. Lincoln Memorial University's Harry Lord took home the indivdual win, while Carson-Newman was able to take home the top team spot. The Eagles' three round total of 827 was just enough to edge out the University of South Carolina Aiken by one stroke and give the Eagles sole posession of first place.
Carson-Newman's scoring was once again led by Alex Hodge. Hodge shot an even 71 with two birdies on the day. His three-round total of 204 was good enough to tie him for fifth place. Hodge was the highest finishing Eagle in Kannapolis this week.
One stroke behind Hodge was Jake Mynatt. Mynatt was able to record a four stroke under par day and leap six spots in the player leaderboard. Mynatt's four birdies brought his round three total to 67 strokes and tied him for seventh.
Jonathan Nielsen collected four birdies in round three, with three of them coming consecutively on the front nine. Nielsen finished three under par in round three, and tied for 22nd over the course of two days.
Jackson Tyler finished the tournament with a total of 213. His even par day locked him in a tie for 39th with teammate Will Collins. Collins, who competed as an individual, recorded a four over day with two birdies.
Rounding out the scoring for Carson-Newman on the final day was Elliot MacGregor. MacGregor four birdies on the day, but a bogey and double bogey would slide MacGregor down the leaderboard.
Winning the Queens Invitational marks the first win for coach Randy Wylie's program since taking the UNG Fall Invitational in October of 2019. "We are very happy for our team and a tremendous victory for the Eagles," Wylie said. "Led by great final rounds of 67 and 68 by Jake Mynatt and Jonathan Nielsen, the Eagles came from behind to defeat two top ten teams along with 13 other good teams."
The Eagles will take a week off and then wrap up their fall slate at the Atlanta National Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia.
