SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman's men's golf team is in a cluster of 10 squads (in a 12 team event) who are within 11 strokes of the leader after round one of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Golf Championship.
The Eagles finished in a tie for fourth with a 313. C-N is eight back of Lincoln Memorial and just three strokes in front of a group of four teams tied for seventh.
"This is a fun event, we're excited to be where we are and to be in this cluster," Carson-Newman's head men's golf coach Randy Wylie said. "Our guys came off the course saying they'd played bad. But you look at the cards and we're right in this thing."
Carson-Newman's Canucks led the charge in round one. Jonathan Kim-Moss (Mississauga, Canada) is in sixth place after the opening round with a 76 (+4). Nicklaus Kennedy (London, Ontario) followed suit with a 77 (+5) to finish in a tie for 10th.
"Jonathan hit it very well, if not for a couple bad swings, he could be leading the tournament," Wylie said. "Nick also hit the ball well, and he could be in contention for the lead but he four-putted twice. With as tough as the greens were, we have a lot of room to improve."
Kim-Moss doubled the par-five 18th hole and tripled the eighth to negate a pair of birdies and an eagle from his front nine.
Kennedy had a trio of birdies on his round, but double bogeyed the par-four 11th and 16th.
Dalton Reese turned in a top-20 performance with a 78 (+6), while Corey Bray wound up in 44th with an 82 (+10).
Rafael Jackson (Rutledge, Tenn.) was the Eagles' non-scoring player after an 84.
"He started hitting some pull hooks and struggled to figure out how to deal with it," Wylie said. "But he did some work after his round on the range to get that taken care of."
The Eagles return to the Sevierville Golf Club for the second round of the tournament with a 10 a.m. tee time for Jackson.
