Eagles finish seventh in deep field at Cougar Invitational
COLUMBUS, Ga . – The Carson-Newman Eagles fired the second-lowest team total (288) at four-over par in Tuesday’s final round to climbed to a seventh-place finish at the 2011 Cougar Invitational played at the par-71, 6,515-yard Country Club of Columbus.
The Eagles finish with a team total 885 (+33) for the 54-hole event, finishing three strokes out of the top five in an NCAA Tournament quality field which featured No. 39 and tournament champion Georgia Southwestern (856,+4), runner-up No. 3 Lynn University (861,+9), and fourth-place No. 18 Georgia College and State (876,+24).
C-N finished ahead of South Atlantic Conference foe and 27th-ranked Newberry College and topped No. 25 North Alabama by one stroke.
Sophomore Jonathan Kim-Moss (Mississauga, Canada) finished at 6-over with a 219. The SAC Freshman of the Year a season ago followed a 73 and 72 in Monday's round with a 74 in Tuesday's final round to finish in a tie for 18th.
Senior Alex Coughlin (Jefferson City, Tenn.) had the low round for the Eagles on Tuesday, closing with a 1-under 70. He fired a 33 on the front nine to start the day fast.
Coughlin moved up 23 spots to finish in a tie for 39th on the strengths on Tuesday's final round, which included five birdies.
Sophomore Michael Horenkamp (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) finished 39th finishing the tournament at 11-over. He fired a 75 in Tuesday's final round after opening the tournament with a 71 (E) and 77 (+6).
Senior Liam Ashby (Dublin, Ireland)finished tied for 57th after a 73 in the final round. The All-SAC performer had nine birdies during the tournament. He shot a pair of 75s (+4) in Monday's rounds.
Junior Gavin Hay (Glasgow, Scotland) was disqualified from the second round after signing an incorrect scorecard, but had the second lowest round for the Eagles in the first and third rounds. He shot an even-par 71 in the final round. Hay had seven birdies in his two counted rounds.
Champion Georgia Southwestern won after having the event's three top finishers.
The Eagles return to action Oct. 16-17 in Clemmons, N.C. at the Will Wilson Tanglewood Inetrcollegiate played at Tanglewood Park Golf Club.
