Carson-Newman Lands Nine on Preseason All-SAC Football Team
ROCK HILL, S.C. Carson-Newman had nine student-athletes selected to the preseason All-South Atlantic Conference football team, including six on the first team, league officials announced Thursday.
ROCK HILL, S.C. — Carson-Newman had nine student-athletes selected to the preseason All-South Atlantic Conference football team, including six on the first team, league officials announced Thursday.
Nate Inman (Fitzgerald, Ga.), Michael Tribue (Antioch, Tenn.) and Kevin Day (Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.) received first team honors on offense, while Zeke Andrews (Eastman, Ga.), Mario Russell (Columbus, Ohio) and Chris Jones (Rome, Ga.) were named to the first team defense.
Doug Belk (Valdosta, Ga.) and Carlos Lopez (Seymour, Tenn.) garnered second team offense honors, and Qua Jackson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) was named to the second team defense.
Inman, a junior running back, was a second team All-SAC performer in 2009 after rushing for 686 yards and six touchdowns on 98 carries.
Tribue, a senior offensive tackle, anchored the Eagles offensive line last season and helped pave the way for a rushing attack that led the nation in rushing yards per game with an average of 336.7. He earned first team All-SAC, Daktronics Super Region 2 All-Region and Daktronics All-America honors and received the SAC's Jacobs Blocking Trophy, presented to the league's top offensive lineman.
Day, a sophomore offensive lineman, played an integral role on an Eagle offensive line last season that guided C-N's rushing attack to 336.7 yards per game, which led the nation.
Andrews, a junior defensive end, earned first team All-SAC and second team Daktronics Super Region 2 All-Region honors last season after leading the team in tackles for loss with 10 and finishing fourth in the conference in sacks with 6.5. He also recorded 39 tackles, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
Russell, a senior safety, was a first team All-SAC selection last season after finishing fifth in the league in tackles with 102, first in the conference and second in the nation in forced fumbles with six and second in the conference in passes defended with 18.
Jones, a senior punter, garnered second team All-SAC accolades in 2009. He ranked second in the league in punting average (39.2) and landed eight punts inside the 20-yard line.
Belk, a senior wide receiver, hauled in 18 receptions for 280 yards and four touchdowns last season.
Lopez, a junior placekicker, received second team All-SAC honors last season after connecting on 10-of-11 field goal attempts to finish third in the league. He also led the conference by making 67-of-69 extra point attempts and was fifth in scoring with 97 points.
Jackson, a sophomore defensive tackle, was named the SAC Freshman Defensive Player of the Year last season after recording 14 tackles, including 6.5 for a loss, a half of a sack and one forced fumble.
