JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – To start a 14-game homestand, Carson-Newman starts its longest time at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex this year on Tuesday at 2 p.m. when King comes to town for the first meeting between the programs since 2020.
Carson-Newman (6-2) has been a quick strike unit this year scoring 11 runs in the first frame putting up at least one run in six of the eight games on the year. Meanwhile, opponents have only scored three times in their first time to the dish. Interestingly, the Eagles have scored at least five runs in every inning this year except for the second where they have not touched home yet.
Balance has been a key strong point for the lineup with eight different players driving in at least five runs on the year. As a team the unit is hitting .332 with five players riding a hitting streak of at least three games and eight hitters reaching base safely in at least three in a row. Kilian Daughtry (Simpsonville, S.C.) has tied his career-long hitting streak with seven going 12-for-29 in that period. Micah Genter (Jasper, Tenn.) has 12 hits in his last 25 at bats during a six-game string.
Tuesday's contest will be the 31st meeting between C-N and King (3-1) with the Eagles on top 20-10 overall and 11-6 in games played at Mossy Creek. The 2021 season was the first time in 13 years, since 2008, that the two programs did not play with the last clash coming on Feb. 11, 2020 at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex, a 12-6 Tornado win.
Carson-Newman committed an early error and walked nine batters conceding the first dozen runs of the day to suffer its first loss of the 2020 season. Coach Tom Griffin's crew had ample opportunities going 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position stranding 11 men on base mustering a total of three hits in 17 tries with runners on base.
In 2021, King finished the season with a 14-24 overall record playing 22 of those games on the road where it recorded an 8-14 mark. After beating Emmanuel in an elimination game of the Conference Carolinas Tournament, the Tornado lost to a pair of top 15 teams, No. 5 Mount Olive and No. 15 North Greenville, by a combined margin of 34-12 to end its season.
In this year's preseason poll, the league selected coach Blaine Brown's team to finish eighth out of 11 teams. The club is off to a solid start to the year taking three of four at home over Emory & Henry where it limited the Wasps to four or fewer runs in the three wins.
The Tornado ran wild in the opening series swiping 11 bases in 11 tries as the team had 29 hits and drew 18 walks in the four-game set. Junior Renwick was dominant at the dish going 6-for-11 with three of those knocks going for extra bases. In the 2020 meeting, he scored four runs against the Eagles.
Robbie Scott led the team in run production driving in five runs and blasting the lone long ball of the series. The senior has hit safely in the first four games of the year going 5-for-13 overall. Only four total hitters posted a .300 average or better with at least six at bats in the opening weekend of action.
While it only gave up five doubles, the Wasps pounded out 40 total hits in the series and walked 25 times recording a .409 on-base percentage in the series. The pitching staff stranded 29 runners over the weekend.
Left-handed pitcher Drew Moore was named to two all-region clubs a year ago after ranking seventh in the country with a 1.72 ERA recording four complete games. On April 28, he reset the school record with 14 strikeouts in a 6-1 win over Emmanuel in the league tournament. In his first start this year, he allowed four earned runs in five innings against Emory & Henry.
Tuesday's game can be seen and heard with video and audio streams available thanks to the Eagle Sports Network by visiting cneagles.com/live for all of the action from the banks of Mossy Creek.
