JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. - Cross country coach Mike Spooner outlines the schedule for the Eagles' 2022 season.
"The schedule we have this year really puts an emphasis on competition at all levels," Spooner said. "We'll be facing a lot of teams that are going to move onto nationals or are in contention for nationals."
The Eagles will kick off the season at the Fleet Feet Cross Country Invitational hosted by Catawba College on Saturday, Sept. 3rd. This is the first trip the Eagles will make to Salisbury, N.C., since the 2014 season when former All-American and cross-country coach Luke Greer finished 29th as a freshman with a time of 27:58. 46.
Carson-Newman will then travel to Cookeville, Tennessee, to take on the Golden Eagle Invitational hosted by Tennessee Tech. The Eagles have not been to a Tennessee Tech-hosted meet in nearly ten years when both the men's and women's teams finished fourth.
Spooner's squad then march on to Morrow, Georgia, to take on the Asics invitational for the second year in the row. The Lady Eagles finished tenth headlined by Rachel Strayer's top-20 finish with a time of 18:54.53. The men's team finished 14th at the event.
The Eagles will continue their trek to Huntsville, Alabama, to race in the D2 Festival Year Showcase on Oct. 22nd. This will be Carson-Newman's first appearance in the cotton state since 2016 when the Eagles competed in the Southeast Regional Championship.
Carson-Newman will head back to Salisbury for the 2022 SAC championship hosted by Catawba College.
The Eagles will then travel to familiar territory as they head to Charlotte, N.C., for the Southeast Regionals on Nov. 19th. Carson-Newman traveled to Charlotte three times last season.
"I wanted to make sure that when we got to the regional in Charlotte that we were able to gain that experience competitively," Spooner said. "We can remind ourselves of this course rather than try to hammer it in like we did last year."
As always, the Eagles will have their sights set on Nationals on Dec. 2nd.
