ROCK HILL, S.C. - For the second time during the 2018-19 indoor season, the South Atlantic Conference has named senior distance runner Luke Greer as the AstroTurf Track Athlete of the Week after the league announcement on Tuesday morning.
The Northhampton, England native previously earned the honor after posting a new school record in the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:23.60 on Dec. 7 in the Grand Valley State University Holiday Open at the Kelly Family Sports Center.
Over the weekend, Greer competed in the Finn Pincus Invitational at Roanoke College in Salem, Va. competing in the mile run and 800-meter events both of which took place on Saturday, Jan. 26 just three and a half hours apart.
The time of 4:20.92 was good enough for a first-place finish in the event and broke a new school record. The 800m run featured his second event win of the day and in the same breath, etched a program-low time in the event at 1:57.88. Both Carson-Newman Track & Field records were previously held by Greer in separate runs during the 2017-18 campaign.
"It was nice to have that break because my body was really tired," Greer said. "I got back into it slowly and got the milelage back up and doing everything I should be. I felt great going into the meet, I was still tired because it was a heavy week but I was ready to race again. It'll take a lot of training still to get that NCAA bid in either of those events or the 3k run and I'll be ready to go again this weekend."
The Eagles will return to Johnson City this weekend for the East Tennessee State University Invitational.
