JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (4-2) women's tennis team incinerated Lee University (1-1) with a 7-2 final at home earlier this afternoon.
"This was a really good win for us," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said. "We needed to bounce back strong after the disappointing loss to Young Harris over the weekend. This win showed that we have moved on."
The Eagles swept Lee in doubles play. In the no. 1 spot, the team of freshman Breanne Tremblay and senior Stefy Stand (Ecuador) defeated Tonya McGraner and Maclain Yowarsky 8-4; at no. 2, Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) and Katie Brown (Douglasville, Ga.) took down Jodie Rice and Krista Good in a contest of the same score.
Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) torched Kelsey Lovingood and Annie Sandberg 8-2 at no. 3 doubles. The duo is now on a five-game winning streak.
"We really came out and took over the match," Coach Love said, "by sweeping the doubles matches to go up three nil."
At no. 1 singles, Stand stole a close match over McGraner with a 6-3, 7-5 decision. Sanderson sealed a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Morgan Friedlander at no. 6 singles. Tremblay dominated Yowarsky 6-0, 6-3 in the no. 2 position.
Guerreiro advanced her singles win streak to four with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Sandberg at no. 3.
"The singles wins at the first three positions clinched the team victory," Coach Love said. "Stefy continues her tough play at no. 1 singles. Brianne, Patricia and Brooke also chipped in with singles victories as well today."
At no. 4 singles, Ott dropped a close 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 contest in favor of Rice. Haleigh Chastain (Knoxville, Tenn.) fell shy of success in the no. 5 spot; Good confirmed a 5-7, 6-3, 10-6 decision.
The Lady Eagles continue play at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex Thursday against Alabama-Huntsville at 1 p.m.
