No. 10 Carson-Newman Falls to Lincoln Memorial, 3-2, in Double OT
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. Leanne Reids (Aberdeen, Scotland) golden goal in the second overtime lifted Lincoln Memorial to a 3-2 win over the 10th-ranked Carson-Newman womens soccer team on Senior Night Tuesday at McCown Field.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — Leanne Reid’s (Aberdeen,
Scotland) golden goal in the second overtime lifted Lincoln
Memorial to a 3-2 win over the 10th-ranked Carson-Newman
women’s soccer team on Senior Night Tuesday at McCown
Field.
With the loss, the Lady Eagles fall to 12-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in
the South Atlantic Conference, while Lincoln Memorial improves to
6-6-2 on the season and 1-4 in conference play.
C-N controlled tempo for most of the match and outshot Lincoln
Memorial 19-5, but the Lady Railsplitters took advantage of the few
opportunities that came their way.
“You would think we had enough opportunities to eventually
win the game, but you have to hand it to Lincoln Memorial,”
C-N head coach Phil McNamara said. “We did not play with the
right attitude. We played with an arrogance tonight and we got
punished for it.”
Lincoln Memorial’s Samantha Meek (Tampa, Fla.) gave the Lady
Railsplitters an early 1-nil lead after placing the ball in the
back of the net in the sixth minute.
C-N answered to tie the match in the 26th minute, as sophomore
forward Sandra Kaelin (Trachau, Switzerland) finished off a pass
from Nikki Brannen (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) from 30 yards out, sending
the teams to the locker room knotted at 1-1.
During halftime, C-N honored its three seniors — Brannen,
Shannon Clancy (Toronto, Canada) and Jessie Stephens (Knoxville,
Tenn.). All three played quality minutes on Tuesday, as Brannen
finished with an assist and Clancy tallied two saves.
“Each one of the three seniors in their own right has been
fantastic for the duration of their time here at
Carson-Newman,” McNamara said. “They have seen a lot of
success here individually, but more importantly as a
team.”
“They have played in a lot of big games and have won a lot of
championships. They have had a great career here. I am disappointed
for them this evening, but it’s one game. We still have a lot
to play for.”
Kaelin gave C-N a 2-1 lead in the 67th minute, but Lincoln
Memorial’s Sarah Taylor (Ajax, Ontario) answered with a
marker in the 87th minute to send the match into overtime.
After C-N outshot Lincoln Memorial 3-0 in the first overtime, the
Lady Railsplitters took advantage of their first opportunity in the
second overtime, as Reid collected a loose ball and fired a shot
past C-N goalkeeper Lauren MacKenzie (Barrie, Ontario) to give
Lincoln Memorial the win.
Sarah Thompson (Frederick, Md.) spent the entire match in goal for
Lincoln Memorial and allowed two goals and collected six saves to
earn the win.
C-N returns to the pitch on Saturday in a SAC matchup at Brevard.
The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
