JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — After beginning preseason camp on
Oct. 15, the Carson-Newman women’s basketball team has seven
practices under its belt, and C-N head coach Dean Walsh has been
pleased with what he has seen from his squad.
“I like where we are at, and I hope we will continue to keep
getting better,” said Walsh, who enters his ninth season at
the helm of the Lady Eagle program. “Even though we are doing
a lot of teaching right now, I can determine the fact that we are a
lot more athletic than last year.”
The Lady Eagles return four starters, including their top three
scorers, from last year’s 19-11 squad that reached the NCAA
Division II Tournament for the third time in five years. Walsh
added seven players in the offseason, giving him plenty of talent
to work with in 2009-10.
“We will have more depth than last year,” Walsh said.
“I honestly think we are more competitive and a better
rebounding team than last year. Chemistry is still going to be an
issue, but we’ve got time to work on that.”
C-N opens a brutal exhibition slate, which includes three
nationally-ranked Division I opponents, on Nov. 2 at Middle
Tennessee State. The Lady Eagles will then travel to Knoxville,
Tenn., on Nov. 5 to take on eight-time national champion Tennessee
before closing out the preseason at North Carolina on Nov. 10.
C-N begins regular season play on Nov. 15 at home against Anderson
(S.C.). Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Holt Fieldhouse.
