JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.—Carson-Newman's men's and women's tennis teams opened the 2012-2013 season with 9-0 victories against Spartanburg Methodist on Tuesday.
The Eagles started the season strong, winning three doubles and six singles matches.
A pair of strong doubles performances was turned in with doubles team No. 2 team Paul Birdsong (Woodstock, Ga.) with Derek Holdway (Woodstock, Ga.) and No. 3 team Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) with Garret Duron (Woodstock, Ga.).
The Lady Eagles had similar success in their doubles matches as the No. 2 team of Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Haleigh Chastain (Douglasville, Ga.) and the No. 3 team of Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) and Katie Brown (Douglasville, Ga.) held Spartanburg Methodist to shutout sets (8-0, 8-0).
"Since this was our first head-to-head match of the 2012-2013 season, it was good to see us come out strong," said Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love. "Our freshman players experienced their first taste of collegiate dual match tennis, and they played aggressively."
In singles, the Eagles had a total of eight matches, which consisted of shutout victories.
The next dual match for the Eagles is against Milligan College on homecoming weekend. The match is scheduled for October 14, 2012 at 1 p.m. in Jefferson City, Tenn.
