C-N soccer assistant Hewitt to helm Owens women’s program

TOLEDO, Ohio – Former Carson-Newman assistant soccer coach Kenny Hewitt has been named the head women's soccer coach for the Owens College Express.

"We had a very qualified candidate pool for this position, and it was clear from our initial interviews that Kenny really stood out from the rest," Owens Director of Athletics Rudy Yovich said. "He is very knowledgeable and passionate about the sport of soccer, and I expect that he will be very successful in a short period of time here at Owens.  We are excited to see him continue the growth of our women's soccer program."

Hewitt becomes the second head coach in the history of the women's soccer program and succeeds Mary Whisler, who went 42-12-5 over the past three years.

Hewitt spent two years at Mossy Creek as an assistant with the men's and women's programs.  He helped lead the men's soccer program to an appearance in the NCAA Division II national championship game last year. On the women's side, he helped the program improve a 3-11-2 record in 2012 to 6-7-4 last year.

Prior to his time at Carson-Newman, Hewitt was a four-year starter at Ashland University. While there, he helped lead Ashland to three Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) championships and one conference tournament championship. The Eagles made the NCAA tournament in three of his four seasons.

Hewitt, who graduated in 2012 with a bachelor's of science, finished his playing career fourth all-time in total points and second all-time in career assists. He was a team captain his final two seasons.

Hewitt takes over a program at Owens that just completed its best season in program history at 17-2-2. Along the way, the team won 15 straight games, captured a Region XII tournament championship and battled some of the nation's top teams into penalty kicks at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Tournament.
