Eagles Defeat LMU In Overtime, 92-87

HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Eagles used a 7-3 run late in regulation to force overtime and pull out the 92-87 win over Lincoln Memorial on Saturday to win their South Atlantic Conference opener.
The game was close in the first half until the Railsplitters went on a 9-0 run sparked by a jumper from Wadner Joseph that gave LMU the 19-10 lead. Carson-Newman (3-0, 1-0 SAC) kept chipping away and managed to grab a one-point advantage on three occasions, but LMU would answer with a basket of their own and eventually go into the half with a 48-46 lead.
The second half saw the Eagles go up by nine before LMU came back to take a 79-74 lead with 1:37 to go. Over the last minute and a half, Carson-Newman would outscore LMU 6-1 to tie the game with an Andy Tipton lay-up with 1.9 second to go and send it to overtime.
Clay Scott and Tipton came up big for Carson-Newman. Scott had a three-point play and Tipton swished a three-pointer with less than a minute to go in overtime to seal the five-point victory.
The Eagles were led by Zach Hyatte off the bench with 21 points. Darren Williams also had 16 for Carson-Newman.
