Carter has also been C-N's recruiting coordinator for the duration of his time on the banks of Mossy Creek.
"I'm so excited for KT, Hailey and Ace," head coach Chuck Benson said. "He's incredibly deserving of this opportunity. He's got a vast array of experiences over the last decade with his last six here with us. He's been instrumental in our successes on the floor, in the classroom and the community. This program will sorely miss him and we wish him nothing but the best as he gets his first head coaching gig."
Carter has helped coach six 1,000-point scorers at Carson-Newman as well as a SAC Freshman of the Year (Ren Dyer), a two-time SAC Defensive Player of the Year (Bryant Thomas), and eight All-SAC players (Tripp Davis, Luke Brenegan, Nick Brenegan, Jack Browder, John Zhao, Trey Hubbard, Thomas and Dyer). He also helped in the development of Browder and Zhao, who earned consensus all-region honors from the NABC and D2CCA.
With him on the staff, C-N was 103-69. The Eagles won the 2021 SAC tournament title and went to two NCAA tournaments with him coaching. He was a part of three 20-win campaigns in the last four years, the most 20-win seasons for the program in a four-year stretch since moving to NCAA Division II in 1993.
Carter started his collegiate playing career at Miles Community College where he led the team to a 2012 NJCAA Region IX semi-final appearance. He wrapped up his playing career at South Atlantic Conference member Lenoir-Rhyne from 2013-2015 as the Bears posted a third-place finish during his junior campaign.
Since finishing his playing days with the Bears, Carter has had coaching stops at Southern Arkansas, Tusculum and Rogers State.
Carter is the second-best athlete in his family by a wide margin after marrying former Lenoir-Rhyne all-region volleyball player Haley Carter (ne' Rhyne). The couple has a son,
