Bio

2024: Hughes becomes Carson-Newman's 23rd All-American all-time, the most in the history of the South Atlantic Conference.  She earns the honor as a utility/non-pitcher.  Hughes is the first Eagle to earn the award as a utility/non-pitcher since Abby Fiessinger in 2017.  The Gibbs product is one of two players from the South Atlantic Conference to earn an honor from the D2CCA. Wingate second baseman Savanna Brooks earned second team honors.  The accolade caps a storied career for Hughes.  A three-time all-region honoree, Hughes was epic at the plate since moving to the leadoff spot in the lineup.  Her .438 batting average was the third-highest in the SAC for the regular season. She finished the year hitting .429. Hughes smashed 66 hits, 20 doubles, a triple and four home runs while driving in 32.  Her 20 two-base hits are tied for the most in a season in school history.  She  scored the seventh-most runs in school history with 57 this year.  Her .529 on-base percentage is the 10th-highest for a single-season. Hughes produced 20 multi-hit games this year, including a 5-for-5 day at the plate where she tied four other Eagles for the single-game record for hits, which she accomplished against Milligan on April 16.  Hughes was also top five all-time in RBI for a career with 167. She is tied with Sara Kelley and her 167 for third-most all-time.  Hughes earned a fourth consecutive All-SAC honor and her second straight first-team recognition as a utility player.  Hughes is the seventh player in program history to earn an all-league honor from the SAC four times.

HONORS:

  • D2CCA Third Team All-American Utility/Non-Pitcher
  • CSC Academic All-District
  • D2CCA All-Region First Team Utility/Non-Pitcher
  • All-SAC First Team Utility/Non-Pitcher
  • TSWA Player of the Week  (4/23)

2023: A two, time all-region honoree, Hughes was a second team selection last year at first base before qualifying for the utility position this year splitting time between first and the outfield.  The Gibbs-product has been her usual productive self at the plate.  Hughes hit .371 with 12 doubles, two triples and six blasts.  In spite of moving from the three-hole to the two-hole in the order this season, she still has driven in 46 runs to rank second on the team and ninth in the run-happy SAC. Her numbers this year have moved her into eighth in school history all-time with 24 home runs and ninth all-time for career RBI with 138. Hughes tallied a career-long 11-game hitting streak from Feb. 26 to March 18. She has 12 multi-hit efforts this year, including three hit days against Shorter (Feb. 12) and Tusculum (April 11).  Hughes drove in five runs in a game for the fourth time in her career against the Pioneers as well.  She has 14 multi-RBI efforts this season.

HONORS:

  • Preseason All-SAC Second Team
  • All-SAC First Team Utility
  • All-Region First Team D2CCA Utility

2022: Hughes was eighth in the country with 64 RBI this season. Hughes had five games this year with at least four RBI and three with five or more. Hughes was 11 RBI away from Brittany Hefner's (2013) school and SAC record 75 RBI for a single season. Hughes has the fourth most RBI in a single season in school history. Hughes  hit 14 home runs this season, she has the 17th double-digit home run season in school history and is tied for third in school history for a single season with with Elayna Siebert (2015).  With 16 doubles, Hughes next two-base knock will move her into the top 10 in program history for a single season. The sophomore hit .403 with 16 doubles, two triples and 14 blasts. She has also stolen five bases. Hughes was named SAC Player of the Week on Feb. 26.  Hughes' prodigious slugging gives her the first SAC Player of the Week honor of her career and the first for an Eagle since Shannon Smith was recognized on March 16, 2021. The Gibbs product was 5-for-13 at the plate last week with 13 RBI in a 4-0 week for the program.  That amounted to a 1.385 slugging percentage and a .385 batting average.  All five of Hughes hits were for extra bases.  She slashed a double against Lander and smoked two home runs against both Erskine and Emmanuel. Hughes crushed back-to-back three-run blasts in consecutive plate appearances against the Lions.  She became the first Eagle to homer in consecutive plate appearances since Shannon Smith did so at UVA Wise on March 13, 2021.
