Bio

2021: A hit machine for the Carson-Newman softball program. Shannon Smith tallied a .405 batting average for the year with 15 doubles, 45 runs batted in and 95 total bases. Smith's .785 slugging percentage goes down as the eighth highest single-season tally in school history, while her 45 RBI are tied for the 14th most in single-season history.  Smith ranks ninth in the country with .44 doubles per game and 18th overall with her 15 two-baggers on the year.  Smith finished the year 23rd in the country in the country in RBI per game with 1.18. Her 1.18 runs per game are also 23rd. Her 16-game hitting streak tied for the fifth-longest in program history. Additionally, she is the first third baseman in the history of the program to play error free for an entire season. Smith was named a TSWA Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks on March 16 and 23.

HONORS:

  • NFCA All-Region First Team
  • TSWA Player of the Week (3/16, 3/23)

2020: Smith sparked her freshman season as an everyday starter at third base.  Two weeks into her Carson-Newman career, she earned state player of the week honors from the Tennessee Sportswriters Association.  Smith batted .500 (7-for-14) with two doubles, two home runs, eight RBI and four runs scored in helping the Eagles to a 3-1 record at the Bearcat/Fleet Invitational last weekend. The Channahon, Ill., native singled and walked versus Young Harris and collected three hits with two doubles and two RBIs later the same day at Erskine. Saturday proved to be the cherry on the sundae for Smith.  The freshman hit a grand slam against King University and recorded a solo homer with an RBI single and three runs scored at Lander University. The grand slam home run was the first such blast for an Eagle since Abby Fiessinger's grand slam against Tusculum on April 2, 2019. Her dinger against Lander was a lead-off bomb, the first home run to open a game for C-N since Fiessinger started off an April 22 win over Newberry with a bomb.  For the year, Smith hit .403 with eight doubles and two home runs across 25 hits.  She drove in 16 and slugged .629.  She had a whopping nine multi-hit days before the season came to a close.

HONORS: TSWA Player of the Week (2/18)

HIGH SCHOOL: Smith hit .380 as a junior for coach Jay Biesterfield at Providence Catholic.  She was named all-conference and all-area as a junior. A two-sport athlete, she also played volleyball, earning all-conference honors as a senior for the Celtics.

PERSONAL: The daughter of Caroline and Shane Smith, both her parents played collegiate athletics.  Her mother played volleyball, while her father played baseball.  She earned second honors from Providence Catholic her first two years of high school.
