Bio

2024: Williams repeats as an All-American after earning honors from D2Football.com last year.  He was a squad selection last season, this year he makes the second team. He adds the honor to a nod from Don Hansen's Football Gazette from late December. Williams is the first two-time All-American since offensive lineman Phil McDowell went back-to-back in 2018 and 2019. Williams continues a sensational run by Carson-Newman defensive backs, joining Desmond Fairell (2019), Darius Williams, no relation (2017), Jerry Miclisse (2016) and Eien Jacob (2014) as DBs to have earned All-America status in the last decade.  That gives C-N six All-American DBs in the last 10 years.  C-N has 21 All-America defensive backs all-time. Williams is the first defensive back to earn All-America honors in two different seasons since Montrea Ford in 1998 and 1999. Williams was fifth on the team in tackles with 53. He had 7.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks with a pick. He also produced the first defensive PAT for the Eagles in a decade in Carson-Newman's win over Wingate in week three. Williams had a career-high 10 tackles that day against the Bulldogs and also produced his lone pick of the season.

2023: Carson-Newman junior safety Major Williams was been lauded with a spot on the D2football.com Elite 100 list following the 2023 season.  The rebranded listing is D2Football.com's All-America team, making Williams the Carson-Newman football program's 129th All-American all-time.  Carson-Newman's 129 All-Americans are the most in the South Atlantic Conference.  Williams continues a sensational run by Carson-Newman defensive backs, joining Desmond Fairell (2019), Darius Williams, no relation (2017), Jerry Miclisse (2016) and Eien Jacob (2014) as DBs to have earned All-America status in the last decade.  Carson-Newman's third-leading tackler in 2023, Major Williams did things no other defensive back has done in the history of the football program. Williams made 53 tackles on the year, including 10 behind the line of scrimmage. He is the first defensive back in the history of the Carson-Newman football program with double-digit tackles for loss in a single season.  He also had two sacks, both against Erskine (Oct. 14) to become the first defensive back with two sacks in a game as well. The Fort Myers, Fla.-product also had a pick, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble, five pass break ups and five quarterback hurries on the year. Williams topped out with eight tackles in three consecutive weeks against Newberry (Sept. 30), Tusculum (Oct. 7) and Erskine (Oct. 14).  He had multiple stops behind the line of scrimmage against the Fleet, Pioneers and at UVA Wise (Nov. 5). His contest at Wise featured his first career fumble recovery returned for a touchdown, bring back a loose pigskin 40 yards to the house.  He tallied his lone interception of the year in the Eagles' opener against Virginia Lynchburg (Aug. 31).

HONORS:

  • AFCA Good Works Team Nominee
  • All-SAC First Team
  • D2Football.Com Elite 100
  • D2CCA All-Region Second Team

2022: Williams finished third on the team in tackles and second in the SAC in tackles amongst defensive backs.  The UVA transfer finished the year with 49 tackles and five stops for loss.  The five tackles for loss are the second-most in C-N history among defensive backs behind All-American safety Darius Williams' 7.5 in 2019.  Williams had a career-high seven tackles on four occasions against Limestone (9/17), Lenoir-Rhyne (9/24), Newberry (10/1) and Catawba (11/12).  Those were among five games where he had at least five tackles. Williams had two picks on the year, both of which were against Erskine (10/15). He brought back one of those interceptions 28 yards for a defensive touchdown.  The sophomore had 15 pass break ups on the year, ranking third in the SAC and fifth in the nation.  His 17 passes defensed are the 11th most in a single season in school history.  His four pass break ups against UVA Wise (11/5) are tied for the fourth most in a single-game in school history. He was named SAC Special Team Player of the Week on Nov. 14.  Williams became the first player in Carson-Newman history with more than 100 yards of punt returns in a single game. He brought two punts back for 111 yards.  The UVA transfer is the second Eagle to earn special teams player of the week honors this season, joining Trayzel Jureidini-Wyche. Williams returned one punt 86 yards for a score, the first punt return for a touchdown for Carson-Newman since Desmond Fairell brought one back against Virginia-Lynchburg in 2018. The 86-yarder is the fourth-longest punt return in SAC and Carson-Newman history.  Williams has three of the seven-highest single-game punt return totals in the last three weeks for the C-N football program.
