Lady Eagles Second After First Round of Newberry College Invitational
HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The Carson-Newman women’s golf
team is in second place in the Newberry College Invitational after
shooting a 339 (+43) on Monday in the first round at Moss Creek
Golf Club.
The Lady Eagles are nine shots back of tournament host Newberry.
The seventh-ranked scarlet and grey lead the event after turning in
a first-round score of 330 (+34).
C-N senior Sarah Jane Sinard (Jefferson City, Tenn.) and junior
Jessica Tarbet (Knoxville, Tenn.) carded rounds of 84 (+10) to
finish the day in a tie for 11th place.
Sophomore Erica Ray (Maryville, Tenn.) is in a tie for 16th after
shooting an 85 on Monday. Sophomore Jennifer Oliver (Knoxville,
Tenn.) turned in an 86 to tie for 23rd, while Lady Eagle freshman
Melanie Manis (Louisville, Tenn.) carded an 88 and is tied for 28th
heading into the final round.
UNC-Pembroke (341) is in third place, followed by Catawba (347),
Armstrong Atlantic (349) and Wingate (349).
C-N South Atlantic Conference rival Tusculum is in 11th place with
a team score of 365, while Lincoln Memorial (366) and Mars Hill
(401) are 12th and 16th, respectively.
Montevallo’s Emily Gibson leads the tournament after firing a
4-over-par 78 on Monday. Gibson is two strokes ahead of
Newberry’s Lisa Brandl.
The final round of the Newberry College Invitational will begin on
Tuesday morning at Moss Creek Golf Club.
