Eagles picked third in SAC Men's Basketball Poll
Oct. 22, 2008
ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Carson-Newman men's basketball team was picked to finish third in the South Atlantic Conference, according to the 2008-09 Coaches Preseason Poll taken at the league's annual Media Day Wednesday.
The Eagles, who finished third in the conference a year ago with an 8-6 mark (18-9 overall), received 55 votes. Carson-Newman returns four letterwinners from last year's team, which set a conference record for scoring average. A pair of those returnees were named to the preseason All-Conference team. Guard Jordan Dixon was named to the first team, while forward Bobby Guyton was named to the second team.
Catawba was tabbed as the preseason favorite in the poll with 73 votes, one ahead of No. 2 Lenoir-Rhyne. Both teams received four first-place votes. Newberry garnered the other first-place vote as was picked fourth, followed by Mars Hill, Tusculum, Wingate, Lincoln Memorial and Brevard.
Wingate and Lenoir-Rhyne shared the 2007-08 SAC regular season title, while Catawba came on strong to win the conference tournament crown.
Carson-Newman will open the upcoming campaign when King College visits Jefferson City on November 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
